Linda - regarding your "War paint" hosta: try using organic liquid fish fertilizer on your hostas. if you're interested in them growing faster and bigger that is... we have 70 hostas in our yard and we use it in diluted form on all of them. dilute it down to roughtly one quarter of the recommendations then simply water as you normally would. especially in the early growth stages. works wonders! growth is accelerated, volume is increased, and the colors are much more vivid. also seems to make new plants produce more shoots than you'd think they would. we have several 3-4 year plants that look like 6-7 year plants.
