Back to asters for a minute...shocked to learn that they can be killed by powdery mildew!

I can't believe it--I have asters coming out my ears and they are pretty darn indestructible here.
That pink one pictured above

Aromatic Aster (Symphyotrichum oblongifolium 'Dream of Beauty')

had powdery mildew pretty bad last year and it didn't even discourage it as far as I could tell, (but I did hack it to the ground when it was done blooming because it was ugly) and it expanded exponentially this year. I dug out about half and just threw it on the compost pile
All my New England's came from self-seeded volunteers in potted plants I brought with me when I moved, and I bought some Wood's varieties, Purple Dome, and a few others. I haven't been able to discourage them either...I even transplanted some into deep shade!
