You can cut small sections of 'chicken wire', enough to cover the area where you've planted your bulbs and secure it with bricks, etc. After the ground freezes their game is over. Come next Spring, you can remove the wire, since there are no acorns or chestnuts buried there and no smell of them, they will not dig there.
