Let me just say a single fan can be an excellent investment. I bought several single fans from Abundant Daylilies in Florida this Spring that are now 2-5 fans. The single fans I bought from two Northern growers are still only one to two. But since these daylilies are hard to find and sold out or much more expensive from the hybridizers, I'm happy to get the single fans. It's worth it to me to get the pollen to hybridize with. If you are just a grower and don't have the hybridizing bug, I can see why you would be reluctant to buy single fans.
