I love Agaves. I'd love to have a whole garden area devoted to them and barrel cacti and such. But it is not to be. I was however surprised at the cold temperatures alot of Agaves can take so long as they stay dry. So for now I'll keep them in pots and move them around as necessary. They can spend the rainy season next to the house where they are protected from rain under the eve but also get some decent sun exposure. But I would like to try one or two in the actual landscape with a mini winter greenhouse I can install over it if it gets really cold. I saw one growing outdoors unpotted at Perennial Obsessions. I asked about it and Cynda said it had been there for two years, but wasn't really sure if it was one year or two. I could believe one year since we had a mild winter but I found it hard to believe it had been out there during the previous brutal winter. Next year I will acquire an Agave 'Montana' and possibly a 'Gentryi'. Quite modest compared to my 2016 semp acquisition list.
