Kentucky Coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioicus) |
Have |
Self-collected 2021 seed pods in early spring 2022. Washed, soaked and stratified approx 40 seeds. Sown in peat/perlite in two large (+3gal) plastic pots (05May & 29Jun). Despite repeated hot water soak/refrigeration cycles, most seeds showed no evidence of imbibing/swelling until scarified (filed) and briefly soaked/rinsed. Those which germinate will be grown-on for up-potting in spring 2023. Very uniform (+90%) germination of scarified seed by day 10.

English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) |
Have |
I have a large number of very attractive, cold hardy, drought tolerant L. angustifolia plants. I have chosen to use the species name rather than use cultivar names. The original genetics of many cultivars have been lost through seed propagation. Despite their labeling, true Hidcote and Munstead for example, are largely unavailable in the horticultural trade.
Lavender (Lavandula x intermedia 'Grosso') |
Have |
Growing Grosso commercially as a row crop for >7yrs in alkaline clay loam in zone 5a, 5680-ft amsl, 13-in precip/yr. Drip irrigated in the summer. Experience occasional winter dieback when snowpack is light, but winter kill is very rare. Deer resistant. A bee magnet.

one of our earliest natives to bloom; from a distance a field of flowering plants can look like a skiff of snow. Very mature (+15 year old) undisturbed plants form +3 foot diameter "fairy rings" as they spread.
