antsinmypants's Plant List: Sown 2023

A note from antsinmypants
Feel free to ask about anything in my list you may be interested in. I'm always looking to trade. Just because something isn't in my want list doesn't necessarily mean I don't want it & just because something I have isn't marked for trade doesn't mean it isn't available for trade. I stay busy so don't always get around to updating.

DND's All Seeds Swap #9 (2022) - wildflowers - From my 2021 garden. Very mild heat.

A chinense from Brazil. Ripens to red. From the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. With the Little-Beak pepper (pimenta biquinho in Portuguese) you can still get the flavor your want - it's just the spiciness that will be missing from whatever you're preparing. Biquinho peppers are small, round and have a small beak-shaped protuberance hanging from the end. The plant makes a beautiful ornamental plant.

This is a yellow-fleshed, "icebox" sized watermelon that grows to 5-8 lbs. This variety was bred for northern growers by genius plant breeder Dr. Alan Kapuler of Peace Seeds in Oregon. He bred Early Moonbeam by dehybridizing Yellow Doll Hybrid watermelon, maintaining sweetness and earliness. A good choice for gardeners trying to maximize their space, Early Moonbeam sets fruit on shorter, highly productive vines. Rind is thin, mostly a light green color interspersed with dark green stripes.

DND's All Seeds Swap #9 (2022) - Phytocraft - Loads of tiny 1-2" spiny cukes for cornichon pickles. Collected 2022.

This is the classic cornichon cuke beloved in France to accompany pâtés and cold meats or for inclusion in Sauce Gribiche. Ideally pick at no more than 2 inches and process in small batches for enjoyment throughout the year. Seven plants are adequate to supply a family, but they will need support. In Switzerland cornichons are an indispensable accompaniment to raclette.

Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours.
Plant them into well-draining soil, lightly covering them.
Keep the seeds in a cool, dark place.
Place the pots in a shallow tray of water to moisten the soil. Remove after the soil is moist, then repeat once it begins to dry.
Germination may take several months. Once seedlings appear, move them to an area with bright, indirect lighting or place them under grow lights.
Once they are a few inches tall, thin them out. Replant the seedlings into individual pots when each tuber has sprouted at least a few leaves.

Sown indoors. No light.
Zones 10 and 11.

These carrots are fun! Coming out of the ground, they are a dull pinkish-red. When you cook them, they turn a deep scarlet-red, making them a vibrant addition to the dinner plate. The elephant's foot seed starts growing with the swelling of the hypocotyl. By the end of the first year, the caudex has grown to approximately 10 mm. (1 cm.) After five years the caudex should have reached a size of 120 mm. (about 5 inches) in diameter.

During the first 3-4 weeks water regularly, probably 2x/week. You don't want the seedlings getting stressed as they are throwing out their first set of roots and leaves–again, if the seedlings dry out too much in this first period you'll risk killing the plant.

Dioscorea elephantipes goes through a period of dormancy for a few months each year. You'll know your plant has gone dormant when the vine dries up and the leaves turn yellow and drop off. When your plant is dormant reduce watering significantly and keep your plant somewhere cool and dry.
