[ Kentucky Coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioicus) | Posted on May 16, 2014 ]

Kentucky coffee tree is late to leaf out in the spring & loses its leaves earlier in the fall.

It has no serious insect or disease problems. It prefers rich, moist, well drained soil, but will tolerate drought.

Female trees produce interesting seedpods in October that remain into the winter, but they can be very messy. Male trees might be more desirable because they lack seedpods.

Kentucky coffee tree will sucker to form a colony.

[ Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Summer Olympics') | Posted on December 17, 2013 ]

Summer Olympics is one of my earliest spring blooming iris. It usually re-blooms late & with a couple buds at the border of 6b/7a. I had it planted in full sun & the results were as follows: 2012, it tried to bloom in December & froze. I was able to cut the stalk & bring it in the week before Thanksgiving 2013. I moved it to where it gets brief mid-day shade in September & October. That little bit of shade seems to have moved up it's re-bloom time, so 2015 there are 7 stalks ready to open November 1st. It also had a summer re-bloom that I missed. It grows like a weed, so it needs to be divided at least every other year.

[ Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Orange Harvest') | Posted on October 28, 2013 ]

Added five fans & rebloomed beginning mid-late October after planting in July (border of 6b/7a). Most growers note this as a reliable rebloomer.

[ Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Bountiful Harvest') | Posted on October 28, 2013 ]

This is a lovely iris. It re-bloomed the week of Halloween in 2012 and 2013 when I had it planted in full sun (border of zone 6b/7a). I moved it so that it receives brief mid-day shade in September & October. 2015 it re-bloomed In September & still has a couple flowers left October 31st. This seems to be a reliable fall re-bloomer here, although it doesn't always bloom in the spring.

[ Salvia (Salvia nemorosa 'Ostfriesland') | Posted on August 30, 2013 ]

'East Friesland' is a great work horse Salvia. Shear back moderately hard after initial bloom for neater plant habit & great rebloom into fall.

[ Garden Sage (Salvia nemorosa 'Sensation Sky Blue') | Posted on July 2, 2013 ]

Sensation Sky Blue is a really nice compact Salvia that does not flop as much as some of the other varieties. Great shape & lovely purplish blue flowers. Shear for nice full rebloom in late summer.
