[ Lily (Lilium 'Back Spider') | Posted on June 24, 2014 ]

This lily was initially introduced as 'Black Spider' but this epithet (name) was later denied Dutch PBR. 'Back Spider' was approved and is now the accepted name.

[ Japanese Iris (Iris ensata 'Thoroughbred') | Posted on June 6, 2014 ]

The petals of Thoroughbred have substantial substance (sturdiness).

[ Peony (Paeonia 'Summer Glow') | Posted on June 2, 2014 ]

These peachy yellow blooms fade to ivory white at maturity.

[ Henry's Lily (Lilium henryi) | Posted on May 21, 2014 ]

The yellow form of Lilium henryi is known as L. henryi var. citrinum. This is important to know if you are looking for the yellow form. Now it is designated as a synonym of L. henryi.

[ Lily (Lilium 'Chameleon') | Posted on January 25, 2014 ]

This martagon hybrid lily is unique in that it opens pink and after a few days it turns cream colored.

[ Lily (Lilium Golden Splendor) | Posted on December 5, 2013 ]

The seed parent bulbs of the 'Golden Splendor' strain are believed to have been lost during a Willamette Valley flood. The bulbs being sold today tend to show a lot of variation in color as they are not the same as the original strain.

[ Lily (Lilium 'Stunning') | Posted on November 22, 2013 ]

'Stunning' is a lily bred from the vigorous late blooming 'Yellow Blaze'. 'Stunning' blooms in early to mid July for me.

[ Lily (Lilium Pink Perfection) | Posted on November 16, 2013 ]

The original seed parent for the Pink Perfection lily strain was lost in a Willamette Valley flood. The bulbs sold on the market today are far removed from the parent that produced the much admired pink and fine inflorescence that a buyer would expect when looking at the photographs (and even the descriptions) used by vendors today. Buyers are disappointed when they receive bulbs that bloom almost white or just a light pink mostly around the margins. It would be wonderful if a breeder could come up with a new parent that would produce a stable, reliable strain like the old 'Pink Perfection'.

[ Lily (Lilium cernuum) | Posted on November 5, 2013 ]

The Royal Horticulture Society's Manual of Bulbs describes L. cernuum as having color ranging from pink to lilac and light purple and sometimes white. It may be lightly spotted. It is native to areas in Korea and Manchuria. There is a white form in commerce that is sold as L. cernuum var. album (not an accepted name). Some believe that it is not a color form of L. cernuum at all but rather a form of L. pumilum. The jury is still out on this one.

[ Lily (Lilium 'Red Fury') | Posted on October 13, 2013 ]

This lily is not registered with the RHS.

[ Lily (Lilium 'Champion Diamond') | Posted on October 8, 2013 ]

This lily was registered in 2004 as 'Champagne Diamond' but was awarded EU PBR 25962 in 2009 as 'Champion Diamond', the accepted name.

[ Lily (Lilium Roselily Annika) | Posted on October 5, 2013 ]

It appears that in this case the cultivar name 'Annika' is an invalid name. According to the 3rd Supplement of The International Lily Register and Checklist (2007) 'Annika' is an Asiatic lily hybridized in 1996 by J. M. Giffei and registered by the same in 2010.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Indigo Rose') | Posted on September 23, 2013 ]

This tomato is more of a novelty than a good tasting tomato. I have to admit it looks very attractive amongst my other tomato plants. Only the surface areas that receive sun will appear to be black or very deep purple, depending on the lighting. That being so, the tomatoes in the center of the plant will show more red when the tomato is ripe. It is hard to tell when the outer tomatoes are ripe because they easily fall off the vine when a cluster is lifted to view the color of the bottom. This is where a mirror comes in handy.

[ Lily (Lilium 'Le Reve') | Posted on September 1, 2013 ]

This lily is registered as 'Joy' in the RHS International Lily Register and Checklist.

[ Lily (Lilium 'Adelina') | Posted on August 14, 2013 ]

Hybridized by Ed McRae.

[ Lily (Lilium 'First Class') | Posted on June 24, 2013 ]

Not registered.

[ Lily (Lilium 'Serenade (Div. 7)') | Posted on June 16, 2013 ]

Serenade is a L. speciosum hybrid.

[ Lily (Lilium 'Accent') | Posted on June 11, 2013 ]

This is an oldie, hybridized at Oregon Bulb Farms by Ed McRae circa 1970.

[ Fuchsia 'Nettala' | Posted on June 9, 2013 ]

This fuchsia is listed as being hardy with protection (HWP). Notice that the corolla is split into separate spoon like petaloids.

[ Daffodil (Narcissus 'Tete-a-Tete') | Posted on May 31, 2013 ]

I have found Tete-a-Tete to work very well in containers and hanging baskets. For the earliest spring color the hanging baskets are very showy.
