Everything I have read about it so far has said "needs full sun" well in the mostly shady woods, how can it still grow? I have even read it is a fire dependent germinator. Hmm...maybe What I saw is not bearberry? Any insight appreciated, Thanx.
Bearberry must have a good amount of sun; it is very shade intolerant. My patch is thinner now that the trees around are casting more shade. I may move it. You might have seen Gaultheria procumbens (the Teaberry or Wintergreen) that does grow in shade and the woods. Partidgeberry is also possible, but has tiny leaves. All three bear red berries.
