My salvias are coming along nicely. There is a new one for me, obtained in a seed exchange. It is Salvia rubescens subspecies dolichothrix. The others are volunteers of splendens, coccinea, and I am hoping nutans.

The 2 rubescens ssp. dolichothrix are the larger plants at the top of the photo, with the cordate shaped leaves. I hear they get huge, so there should be some interesting competition in this container.

My bet is that Salvia rubescens ssp. dolichothrix will snuff out everything else in that pot. It gets both tall and wide.

I may see how it goes with selective pruning. All the other containers have designated morning glory occupants.

Joseph,

Remember that Salvia rubescens ssp. dolichothrix likes a lot of water.

According to Kermit of FBTS, this is what he wrote on Salvia rubescens ssp. dolichothrix. https://www.fbts.com/salvia-ru...

"Although water-loving, it grows well with average supplemental watering based on local conditions."

Kermit also lists the height as 72 to 84 inches and 48 inches wide.

I grew it a few years and had it it a 16 or 18 inch container on my patio and thought I was giving it a lot of water, but apparently, I wasn't since it died on me. Perhaps it needed a much larger container also.

Good luck Crossing Fingers!

In a large container our Salvia rubescens ssp. dolichothrix uses 3 or 4 inches of water every day. I fill the saucer every time, at least twice a day.

Salvia microphylla 'Royal Bumble' survived overwintering indoors in the garage and is now producing nice foliage.

Thanks! They are at the end of the stem, but more growth is starting lower down on the stems, too.

Joseph,

Your Salvia coccinea looks great.

I'm guessing you're not getting the unseasonably high temps we've been having here. We've been very dry here too.

Thanks, Marilyn. No, it's hot as it usually is in August and September.

Nice reds!
I couldn't pass on some new intros this season that appeared in a local garden center. Salvia 'Skyscraper' series pink, purple and orange, one of each! I up potted them to 15" containers.

@FBTS offers them and says they will bloom bountifully in the shade! Mine get morning sun and so far holding their own heat and water wise.

I'm a zone 7b but not sure about over wintering

Nice one, Judy!

Unfortunately the violent thunderstorm broke the flower stem off of that red Salvia coccinea.

I'm excited, I saw flower buds forming on one of my Salvia rubescens subspecies dolichothrix plant!
