I can't believe it is already January 9th and no one has kicked off a new Northeast Veggie Gardening thread for 2020, so I thought I would get it started.

I continue to enjoy spinach and lettuce from my greenhouse, and expect it to continue for the foreseeable future since there are no real cold temperatures in the forecast...just yet.

Yesterday, I officially started looking at seed catalogs and seed sites, promising myself I was going to cut back this year. You can tell cabin fever has set in. Blinking I wish I could find everything I want in one catalog or on one website and avoid those multiple shipping charges. Today, I am going to take a ride to Home Depot and Lowes. I'm sure they must have their seeds out. I'll see what I can pick up there before ordering online.

What are the rest of you up to?

The late radio gardening host, Ralph Snodsmith, used to call January "Armchair Gardening Month". I haven't looked at the catalogs yet but like Jim, dislike multiple shipping charges. Since I still have enough tomato and lettuce seeds, I will take my time.

Thanks, Jim, for starting the thread...I was going to, but I guess I kept forgetting...age, you know! I've looked at all my seed catalogs, will be ordering soon. I, too, am cutting back...not planting peas this year, didn't get many last year. I also raid my son's garden, he's a better gardener than I am. I do grow lots of flowers, will continue to plant many dahlias, glads & easy sow annuals. My handyman, who tills my soil, is suffering from cancer....don 't know if he'll work this year or not, don't think I can dig myself, so I have to solve that problem first.

We have a new thread. Great!!

I also hate those shipping charges. Try to order from as few different places as possible.

Sometimes I get lucky and get free shipping promo.

Just got back from my seed hunt at Home Depot and Lowes. I was able to get most of what I wanted. I did have to order a few packets online, but I limited it to one site. Wound up with 18 packets of seed. I'll probably wind up picking up some more peppers.

TOMATOES
Early Treat
Early Girl
Rutgers
Mountain Magic

PEPPERS
Shishito
Carmen (Corno di Toro or "Bull's Horn")
Ace Bell

Bunching Onions
2 types of Gourmet Blend Lettuce
Spinach
Genovese Basil
Cucumbers
Cabbage
Acorn Squash

Also picked up a Marigold Mix and Cut-n-Come Again Zinnias.

I may need a bigger greenhouse!

Sounds like a great list to me. But yes, you need more peppers!!

My order from Totally Tomatoes has not arrived yet but I ordered tomatoes, some eggplant.,lots of cucumbers and some peppers.

On the peppers both Desperado Annaheim, Lola Sweet Bananna, Felicity no heat Jalapenos I needed seeds for but grew last season and loved.

I also (from TT) ordered Crest Red Pepper, Carmen and Tricked You.

I ordered both Felicity and Tricked You no heat Jalapenos. Had Felicity last year and simply loved, loved it. The peppers are a stunning deep green and then turn to red if you leave them.

Eggplant seeds so far I have only ordered Bride (sometimes called China Bride) which is a pink swirled white eggplant. Fairy Tale which I had last year and just absolutely love. It is so pretty with the magenta stripes on smaller teardrop shaped eggplants.

Then new for me Patio Baby. Golf Ball size small round eggplants.

Will be ordering some pepper seeds still; from Evergreen Seeds or Kitawanza Seeds. While I am there I will be getting some of the Asian Eggplant seeds that they carry. Will see which ones but like so many of the choices.

Thank you. I bought some seeds from Harris, thanks to you. The only vegetable I bought was Hungarian Wax. I had it once before (it overwinters well in a sunny window) and didn't recall it being hot. Guess I'll find out the hard way!

Still looking for eggplant.

Mailman just brought my seeds from TT. As well as everything I ordered I got a free tomato seed called Wisconsin 55. Never heard of it.

Also got a Hot Pepper Sandia. Not going to be growing the Hot Peppers.

The Asian Eggplants are much easier to get fruits on than the larger Italian ones.

Shishito are now one of my mainstays after trying it last year, thanks to Rita. My mouth is already watering for them sautéed in a little olive oil with sea salt. Great appetizer. My shishito's were extremely prolific last year, as were all my peppers last year...for the first time...I think keeping them in the greenhouse for the entire season made a big difference. I am probably going to pack my greenhouse with all peppers for this summer. Everything else will be planted outside.

Rita's praise of Shishito also got me to buy/try one and I loved them. Rita should get a commission.

You were right. I was one who had no idea they even existed. Regular big green peppers don't agree with my stomach but the Shishito are ideal in taste, colors, and volume they produce.

I allowed some to dry out just so I could be eating my own peppers in winter.

Oh, good idea.....I love them like Jim makes them.....I always feel nighttime temps are too chilly here for peppers, but my son is in a colder area & his peppers are great......guess it's just me.
