Neoregelia 'Magali' for the lovers of red Bromeliads.

I bought 3 Magali in December. They were big beautiful and oh so red. The best part was they were marked down to $20 buy 2 get one free. They seem to be the bunnies favorite at my house. Too bad cause I wanted 5 more.

Wow, those critters were hungry. I wonder if it would help if you put rabbit repellent granules on the soil surface? I got sick of spraying for deer and rabbits and have found the granules last longer and seem to work for me.

If it helps, you will have many, many pups from the Magalis you have, my old mom plant looks horrible and the middle is rotting but she keeps producing.

It's all part of having a garden, in the summer the Lubber grasshoppers, the winter the rats, then there's the squirrels always digging up a plant to plant the acorns....keeps me on my toes. At least I've not had to deal with rabbits.

Then like this morning at 32 degrees, mother nature keeps me on my toes, lots of tender plants in my Florida room, this makes the 8th time this fall/winter season we have dropped into the 30's, but last night was the coldest. I only covered one section of bromeliads that are under a crape that no longer has leaves. Frost on roofs, cars and grass this morning. This hasn't happened this many times in many years, and then my hubs said the news said we might see snow in N. FL on the Valentines weekend .

Hmmmm, I just checked the forecast and it looked good through the 19th - but you never know. I don't think we got as cold as central Florida, there was some frost but it was very light and by 7am the temp was 38. Areas west of the St. Johns river got a lot colder.

I am looking forward to the warmer temperatures that are being forecast at this time. Bottomed out and held at 40 for many hour this morning.

Yes, I can see the whole ten day now and doesn't look like anything about snow, the panhandle might get down to freezing, but looks good here. The media likes to freak us out way ahead of time I guess.

Coastal usually always warmer from the ocean, inland gets much cooler.

Looks like some rain coming, we sure can use it. I did go around the garden and the bromeliads all look great, I'm surprised how well my tender plants that say they can't be out in below fifty degrees do so well, of course I have overhead oak trees. Hibiscus got the most damage, but they always need trimming back anyway. Gingers actually look pretty good too. My salvias look happy and pentas not fazed at all. I think they've all adapted to the cold temps, since they came a little here and there, but warmed up fast.

The trees in my yard are deciduous and it really shows, the frost did a number here. My pentas all need to be cut to the ground, I know they are alive but they are completely brown. The gingers all fried and have already been cut, I know they will come back from the rhizomes. Cannas have already re-sprouted and the Ti's look bad and will need some trimming but they are all alive. I believe my garden got too dry and was not in good health when the cold hit. That is not like me, I did have my irrigation system set to water but it comes on in the middle of the night and I never realized our pump had burned up. Yesterday we turned the system on to check if any heads need replacing and oops, no water. I am hoping we do get some rain today, the pump cannot be replaced until Monday.

I have oak trees so they never go completely bare, only the Turkey oak will completely lose all leaves before the new leaves come in, when I see new leaves on the oaks, I know Spring is here .

I'm surprised about the pentas, mine are well established, only seen them damaged when we had temps below freezing for several hours, the tall red and deep pink are the hardiest. I have a huge five foot tall clump that is under a bare crape myrtle tree on the north side of my garden, and they are completely unfazed, so maybe it was the lack of water in your case, Alice.

Good news, looks like some much needed rain coming, and I don't see temps lower than 50 here all the way through the 20th of February according to Weatherunderground's extended forecast. All my plants are back outside again .

The pentas were also well established 4' - 5' clumps, it had to be the dehydration. The pond in the backyard provides so much mist during the winter mornings that everything looks wet, I am sure that is why we never realized the sprinklers were not working.

Been raining here all night and this morning, just a light but steady drizzle but that is the best kind of watering. The garden is happy with the weather but my arthritic knee is not so pleased.

Nice Scott, I wonder if that's what I have, a friend gave me a plant and I put it in with others and noticed a flower on it like that. I'll get a pic later, if the flower is still there.

Sherri, S. 'Galactic Warrior' is one of my top favorites. It is a slow grower, but gives more time to enjoy the beauty of its life.

Here is a look at one of the pups removed last year from Neoregelia 'Yang Novar'. The coloration has held but this generation pup comes in with a 43" spread on the lower leaves.

Scott, that is a nice one. I agree the color is nice and deep, some don't stay like that as they age.

Hope broms survived temps in 20s.

Most of my broms seem to be weather tolerant since they are pass along plants. The one that seems to be most vulnerable to freeze is the Ae DelMar. Hope it survived in garage since mom birthing babes!

I usually get off work at MN. I was out between 1-2 am trying to put pots under tarp. The plant I couldn't move is the B Windii since it was frozen to the bird bath!

I put pots in bird bath last fall to better enjoy blooms from window!
