The Phragmipedium Sorcerer's Fire keeps on blooming. It had started in the middle of Summer and still shows no sign of slowing down.

Beautiful start to the new year, Ursula, and a happy new year to all of my orchids friends. I see Ken's beloved football team didn't fair very well in last night's game but a trip to Fairchild Gardens should lift his spirits. It is absurdly cold here this morning so I have found a south facing window and am curled up with the dog on the floor. One does what one must do.

Very nice form and colors on 'Summit', it's a beauty. Being a Schombo man, I love the superbiens. How long are the spikes? Nice Gongora. I wonder if mine is spiking?

I agree They are all lovely, Ursula. I am absolutely going to quiz our friendly growers about finding a Gongora Pterodactyl. Orchid show here this weekend, Yay!

Now Jim weren't you the fellow with the comment about dogs and kids and a river, when we were shopping in Apopka? Rolling on the floor laughing Glad you've found a good use for the dog at least. They can serve well to keep your feet warm. I am heading to wintery Salt Lake for the birth of grandbaby #3 at the end of the month. Luckily my daughter's house has two dogs (one for each foot) and a nice gas fireplace.

Happy Happy New Year!

Blc Lily Marie Almas 'Sun Bulb' blooms every Christmas here, 3in flower on tidy bifoliate , progeny of Blc Orange Nugget. Easy and temp tolerant, has deeper red coloring this year since it's about a foot from my window and temps have been cool. enjoy!

Well, my mystery orchid that lost its tag is going to be purple and floofy. I thought I knew which one it was a few days ago, but then realized that one was next to it. So now it's just waiting for it to bloom and hope it's bloomed before and I have a picture of it. But I haven't bought anything in a while and I haven't bought anything in a basket for quite some time, I think. So I'm feeling like I might have a picture of this one. Still can't believe the tag is gone! I'm blaming Dad; he moved all my orchids last spring when we took them out of the garage.

Melanie, at least your Dad keeps you on your toes? Looks promising!!

Roberta, what a gorgeous color on your Cattleya, I like it very much! Lovey dubby

Jim, I just went upstairs to measure, the spikes on the Schom superbiens are a bit over 3 feet tall. I will take some more pictures with plant included, when all spikes are open.

I've been trying to start a coal fire in the front yard to see if I can get global warming to kick in but nothing to show for it so far except dirty hands. Hilarious!

Jim, that wouldn't work for a very simple reason. Global warming happens only in uninhabited places.... Big Grin
Around here temps hovered around the freezing mark, but with nice sunshine it was pretty enough to take a nice walk at a local wildlife center.

Tara, thanks and you will! Smiling

Happy New Year! Group hug

I have been on a business trip and just returned before the holidays. It has been crazy at work, but now I am on vacation until Jan 12. Hurray!

The GH is really producing excellent results with the orchids. This is Clowesetum Jumbo York, a lovely orchid that I purchased from Fred Clarke in 2012. This is the second blooming. The blooms are much more defined in color on this year's blooms and many more buds.

Nice looking plant, Melissa and I love the bloom whiskers.

We are on the redeye back to Tampa tomorrow night. The forecast here is for the real cold air to arrive next week. They must be kidding me?!!

A few more bloomers.

Onc. Tsiku Marguerite (x 2 plants). I got the tail end of the blooms. They bloomed while I was out of town. Apparently they have a great scent.
Thumb of 2015-01-02/shadytrake/6ae712

Onc. Gold Dust - We almost lost this plant last winter. It is bouncing back.
Thumb of 2015-01-02/shadytrake/9ae594

And more Den Gillieston Gold - just keeps on blooming like the energizer bunny + another working spike.

Melissa, I just posted my Onc. Tsiku Marguerite a few days ago! That's cool that you have it, too. And it does smell awesome. Makes me want to go inside and snack on things that are bad for me. Rolling on the floor laughing

Oh, the little Onc's are just lovely, Melissa. I always am a fool for a yellow/white combination like that.

Melanie, excited to see your mystery orchid unfold!
Melissa, the Gold Dust is so cute, like little fried eggs. And that Clowesetum is so exotic looking! Sighing!

Agreed, cold, being away from home, and fretting over my plants & my dog while I'm gone is a tough way to start the year. Tried to go for a run in the cold and it choked me! Coughed and coughed. Sad

Keep the bloom photos coming, they are cheering me up!

I just returned from my stay in Miami, and here is two plants that welcomed me with flowers, 'Emerald Isle' and Mary Jo McNerney.

Because I only had one day to spend "Orchid-hopping", I had to pass up the visit to Fairchild. Fairchild is so huge and travel so difficult (traffic was just horrible!), I knew if we chose to go there we would be unable to go anywhere else. Instead we opted to visit a much smaller Botanical Garden in South Beach and then traveled down to Homestead and visited three nurseries. One nursery specialized in Phal. (beautiful plants but of little interest), one specialized in Vanda and rare Staghorn Ferns (interested but no room to bring any back), and then a nursery that specialized in Cattleya Alliance plants, and did their own hybridizing and cloning. The first place was owned by a Mexican-American family, the next by a Thailand-American family, and the third by a Cuban-American family. Though none of the three of us bought anything, I did make two good contacts for future buying (no Phal.).

Many of the orchids and staghorns growing on trees at the Botanical Garden was unlabeled. I asked one of the (office) workers if there was anyone who could name some of the plants, and she said: "Wait right here and I will go get our senior horticulturist. He just loves to talk about his plants". When he came, and found out I wanted names of both staghorns and orchids, he called his #2-man, a fella that was his "orchid" expert. The two of them showed and talked about all the plants we had interest in, and then I noticed that there was a shade-house in one corner of the property that was not available to the public. I asked what was behind the fence, under the shading, and was told that was where they had hundreds of unlabeled orchids and was in the process of re-potting and naming as many as they could. They just said: "Come on, we'll open it all up for you", and we proceeded to that closed-off area. There were some beautiful, though neglected orchids/staghorns there. I almost begged to be allowed to purchase a few plants (I WILL beg for orchids!), and even promised to tell them what the plants were when they bloomed, but they declined. The orchid horticulturist took my card and promised to send me a list in the spring of what they would/could sell. Time will tell if that happens. You could tell they both loved to talk about (their) plants, especially to people who had knowledge of what they were growing.

Ken, sounds like a good trip! I've been thinking about going to Fairchild Gardens sometime in the future because all the guests at MOSI keep telling me I have to go see their butterfly exhibit. I was checking their webpage and it does look like a big place! And I'd probably just hang out with the butterflies all day anyway, knowing me. But I still might get down there one day.

Melissa, when I was reading about your Onc. Gold Dust, I thought I had that one, too but today I went out to the shade house and confirmed it. It looks like we have the same taste in Oncidiums! Mine hasn't bloomed as I bought it quite small. It was at St. Pete Orchid Farm and they had a sample plant and then lots of little ones to buy. Yours looks fabulous and I'm glad I can see what the heck it was I bought!
