Lyn, in addition to the comments above, hens and chicks are a semi-evergreen perennial that is hardy to your zone. So to avoid the same thing again, leave them outside all year, if your flower pot can take it. I can't tell what material it's made of. Anyway, the hens and chicks will survive your winter season without so much as a blink of an eye, and they will increase by runner for the growing season, so you can then divide off the extra increase and tuck them in any little nook or cranny (or old shoe or toolbox, etc.) where there is hot Summer sun and good drainage!
They also have *very* low water needs during the growing season!
