Hi,

I was wondering what type of plant I have bought and the maintainance of the place e.g. how many times I should water it?

Kind regards,

Welcome!

How big of a pot is that? It looks like a baby palm tree but backlit like that, its really hard to tell. Can you take another photo?

I have taken clearer photos. Some of the leaves have started to turn yellow, and one leaf has shriveled up. How do I maintain this plant? or try and nurse it back to health?

Yellowing leaves could be due to too much sun. Cast Iron Plants like shade.

Cast Iron plants are succulents. I still think this is a palm tree. In the second photo front leaf, it has a split leaf.

This is Aspidistra - also called a cast iron plant.

It does look like an Aspidistra elatior. I also just recently acquired one, but a variegated version. Quite a no fuss plant, I read not to disturb during repot, so I carefully repotted, watered thoroughly once and left it alone. Now it is just Mother Nature caring for it outdoors in shade, but beside our house. I love the plant, cast iron indeed, no fuss, it did have some drying out at some leaf tips when I initially acquired it, but it has not spread, so I think it was just like sunburn at the nursery when I got it.

Give it time to adjust. It does take its sweet time.

Hi I read that Aspidistra elatior can handle harsh conditions, so I am wondering why is my one dieing.

Should I remove the dead leaves or cut off the yellow tips of the leaves?
Should I add plant food?
How often should I water the plant?

I don't think your plant is dying, maybe just acclimating. I will give it time to adjust.

This is a nice info about caring for the plant: http://www.ourhouseplants.com/...

Something that I noticed in the pictures are that a few of the leaves look split. Aspidistras do not typically do that. Also, Aspidistras are not succulents, as someone mentioned. Curiously, they are in the same family as Asparagus.

I'd look at Kentia palm (Howea Forsteriana).. see if the pictures match yours.. Look at the base, the shape of the plant, and the leaves.. I think the palm has more stem than Aspidistra, and shorter leaves. Also the splitting of the leaf as it matures. I believe yours still has some juvenile form.
Do I see a seed on top of the soil? If so, I'd be pretty certain it was a palm.
Aspidisteras have a leaf-life sheath at the base of the stem. I'm thinking on palms it would be more fibrous.
I may have the variety of palm wrong, but I'm thinking that's what it is. I've got many Aspidistras, and your plant doesn't quite fit, to my eye anyway.

Here's another discussion I found with a similar looking plant to yours.

Hi,

Shall I cut the split leaves and the yellow tip on the leaves?

How often should I mist these plants?

Is it ok to leave it near the window to get sunlight or should i avoid direct sunlight?

Also water too much and then draining it is a way to ensure that the plant is hydrated but would that lose nutrients in the drain water or shall i leave the drain water in my plant saucer?

From the other items visible in the photos, I would guess this is a 4 inch pot. I am sticking with baby palm of some sort.

You can cut the yellow tips off to make your plant look nicer. Don't leave it sitting in water as that will encourage root rot and palms are very susceptible to salt burn so rinsing water through is a good idea.

Don't put it in direct sun (bright light is good) until we figure out what kind of palm.

I'm leaning towards Daisy's suggestion, it looks like it could be a young Dypsis lutescens, Areca palm:

I agree with Sue, Daisy & Sherry. It is certainly not an aspidistra. Aspidistra don't look like that at all. This is absolutely a palm. I can't say which as it's so young yet but it's a palm.

I agree that it's probably not Aspidistra which has wider leaves. However, yours cld develop same. When I first saw it I thought Cordyline. But it would also take a little while to develop a stem to id it as one.

I agree that.the split leaf suggests a palm. Maybe a chamaedorea. If the individual leaf stems come from a seed then maybe Neanthe bella, Parlor Palm. If the leaf stems are on a running rhizome, then ch. seifrizii, Bamboo Palm. I will post a pic of the latter. Mine has had too much sun and insufficient water.

All of my suggestions require at least part shade in a hot climate. If grown indoors, bright light. Do not overwater indoor plants, esplly when the plant is not in active growth. Just keep moist or dryer when dormant. If the direct sun coming through a window is hot it will burn the leaves.
Palms vary in their sun/light requirements. Some require full sun. But a Wedding Palm would cook in the hot sun. Others like the Archophoentix types, Bangalow, Piccabeen, Alexander, which are native to around here, can handle full tropical sun but also full shade or indoors in good light. They look like like your leaf stems when young, but soon grow split leaves and after a while, thin woody stems. Other palms like Golden Cane, an areca, can similarly handle a wide range of conditions, and outside can become weedy after a while.
