The catalogues are arriving and the first ones were not that great.
But today The Baker Creek "The Whole Seed Catalogue" came.
What a neat one-you do not have to search around to find Open Pollinated varieties! So many interesting seeds-and I already have my supply for 2017. Next year I will order from there !

It seems that just like holiday decorations being set out earlier every year, the garden catalogs do the same. Pure torture! Drooling
I just received my first one today from Pinetree Garden Seeds. I have always had good luck ordering from them, reasonable prices and reasonable amounts of seeds in each pack.

I have requested removal from all catalogs. I rely now strictly on the Internet. Some don't accept my request and send anyway. Too bad cause they killing trees that I turn around and immediately recycle.

Love Pinetree BTW.

Yes, I do not usually encourage paper catalogues, but I did request the Baker Creek one as I had not seen it before. It does have a great deal of information besides what they are selling.
And I do prefer on line ordering.

My Pinetree catalog arrived last week already. I miss the days when they didn't arrive until after Christmas. Who has time to look at them now???? Confused

Caroline, I ordered some seeds from Baker Creek last winter for the first time and was very happy with them! And they certainly have a wonderful selection of OP varieties.

Pinetree is another favorite for me; already got mine, too -- but will probably wait until early January to start compiling my orders Smiling

I like Pinetree as well. Another that sells a lot of esoteric stuff is TradeWindsFruit. Have purchased a lot of seed from them and it was all good stuff. Not sure if they have a catalog.

I have not seen Pine Tree or Seed Savers catalogues.
What are you finding that is new or interesting?

I got my SSE catalog around a week ago, though I don't buy from them often.

I worked for the postal service for several years and I can confirm that a lot of the companies whose catalogs you are getting are not in charge of whether or not you still get them. They can sign you up but they can't take you off. They are mailed out en masse from companies that keep independent lists which are added to every year but are not separated from for as many as 10 years, if ever.

That's why you can sign up easily but can't unsubscribe nearly as easily!

So I finally sat down today to put together my seed orders for myself and our MG plant sale. I could not believe the prices of seeds at some places--Burpees was the worst. I found some of the same seeds I wanted from Burpees at Park Seeds for almost 1/2 the price (same number or more of seeds). I so prefer to order from the smaller growers that seem to be more reasonable. Unfortunately, there are some hybrids that our plant sale customers want. Sigh.... Spent almost $200 on 4 seed orders today. I don't think I've ever spent over $150. before. I've become a "seed miser", not giving whole packets to people when we only need to grow 2-3 dozen plants. Shrug!

I agree, Linda -- seed prices seem to have taken quite a jump! Blinking

All the more reason for me to continue my quest to find OP varieties that work well for me and save my own seed. (I know not everyone can or wants to do that.)

Some companies are now offering free shipping but have increased the costs of seeds (and other supplies). The majority of consumers won't notice, which is why/how they do it.

I have not bought any seeds from the big guys in years. Their prices are rediculous. In fact will be buying very few seeds this year. I will be planting a few things that I just could not live without many moons ago. Thumbs up

HNY everyone.

To be honest, I know the prices are high but I buy seeds anyway. Part of the experience of gardening for me is to spend way too much money and buy way too many seeds. Maybe I should get help. Ha ha.

As a long time seed-aholic there seems to be no end to ways I can justify spending on seeds. Here is my favorite: Packet price/# of seeds, X % germination rate x retail value of each seedling. Works every time in my favor. Whistling Whistling Whistling It was a critical calculation when I had to justify (to myself cause DH doesn't begrudge me) $118.00 just for delphinium seeds from New Zealand. That batch I winter sowed and harvested over a period of four years. Priceless! I finally sat down and looked at some of my recently-arrived seed catalogues. I don't know why but I'd never checked out Pinetree seeds before. I was really surprised at how reasonable their seeds were, and shipping wasn't bad either.

I literally have boxes of seeds. I somehow end up with all of the leftovers from our plant sales, etc. I try to use them in following years, but end up with the predicament of not having enough left of some varieties to grow what we need. So, I buy more seeds and the cycle repeats Sighing!
