Happy New Year to all my Semp buddies. Hurray!

I look forward to following your progress this year.

It will be 4-5 months before I will know if I have any survivors out there. Sighing!
Sub zero temps this week, so they will be tried. Sighing! Sighing! Blinking

@Valleylynn guess you need to make this thread sticky and let the 2016 thread fall into
dis-use : - ) Shrug!

@CDsSister
The thread is a sticky and the old thread is no longer a sticky. Big Grin
And I am cheering your hardy little semps on to victory in the year 2017 Marilyn. Hurray!

In the last 12 hours it has been snowing, raining and ice pellets here in the Willamette Valley. Temp is 35F as of 4:00 pm.
Might get snow tonight when the temps drop to the high 20's.

Yes... how grande. Thumbs down I heard the pounding on the roof and went out to see a nice sleet storm. It is better than hail as it seems lighter and softer, like little pellets of compacted snow. Another arctic blast is just beginning. So nice. Angry

Thanks, Lynn, think we were thinking/doing the same thing at the same time. I should have just given it a bit more time... But my only excuse is boredom, with what I was doing not what you were doing. D'Oh!

Here in Las Vegas, we are having bizarre weather. One day 60 degrees, next 40, then 50's with rain and then back down in temperature. I have a few damaged because of the rain, then the lower temperatures. I have many of mine in shallow pots that are about 25" round. This spring I am going to place all of the ones that got damaged, into one pot. Then next winter, that pot or pots can be placed inside of the garage with the other zone pushing plants for the winter.

I have some fantastic winter color happening. Just need my grandson to show me how to get from my i phone to here.

Happy New Year from Las Vegas....
If it is not going to affect you five years from now, do not let it get you down.

Happy new year everybody!

Temperatures here were fairly mild (about 2 to 10°C) until mid of last week. Now we're having temperatures of -3 to -5°C. No snow so far.

Seeds of about 175 different planned crosses (136) and insect pollinated cultivars (39) are out in my micro green houses since last Friday.
Last years seedlings are doing fine so far. A lot of greens so far - I'm still hoping for colours in spring. Crossing Fingers! There are about 250 survivors according to my latest counting, resulting from 18 planned crosses and 24 insect pollinated cultivars.
A total of 34 different types of seeds did not produce any viable seedling at all. A lot of them being sempervivum x jovibarba roller crossings.

This year I'm expecting a higher success rate as I concentrated on sempervivum x sempervivum crosses. Plus I'm starting earlier and will wait longer for transplanting to reduce losses (about 120 seedlings so far or about 30% - 2 sets of true leaves is no guarantee for survival as it seems) Crossing Fingers!

I lived in Milwaukie, Wisconsin when I was a wee lad. Bin dare... dun dat. I remember opening a window and jumping out onto the snow that was packed up against the house. What a ride!

The local weather guy says the stuff that fell on Canby tonight is called "graupel". Confused Confused Confused What the hey? Never heard of it. Looks kinda sparkly and crystalline.

He also says we're likely in for some freezing rain next weekend. D'Oh!

Happy New Year to you Michael. It's good to see you.
I am so excited about all of your work in hybridizing sempervivum. You have been very busy. Hurray!
I have also tried to cross Sempervivum and Jovibarba, with no success. I don't think we should give up though.
I can picture a 4 or 5 inch roller in amazing colors.

Tim that is beautiful. I can see the sparkle going on in your photo. I did not know that you lived in Wisconsin.
Nothing here this morning, just a little crunchiness to the grass. As soon as it is light enough I'll go out and check on the babies (semp seedlings) from last spring.

Happy New Year everyone! We've had some pretty warm days (40s) and nearly all the snow is melted now. Temps this week are expected to be 0 to -4 deg. Yikes, and no snow on my semps! Way too many beds to cover so I guess we'll see how tough they are.

You've sure been getting some unusually cold weather out on the west coast this year, aren't you? Good luck to all.

Michael, will be exciting to see how your seedling do! Sounds like you'll have many of them.

Just a dusting at my place. Still I DON'T LIKE WINTER ONE BIT! This is why I'm in Zone 8!

Next few days are supposed to be brutally cold. Am almost glad I have a cold and a book to finish so NO temptation to go outside.
