This thread is for seed chat -- We'll use the seed swap tool to make pre-swap requests. We’ve done an increasing amount of swapping in advance of our seed and plant swap dates, and it’s a lot of fun. At the swap, I’ll have bags set up with names on them, like an elementary classroom on valentine’s day. The tool will create a list of what each person has requested from you, making it easy to drop requested packets into bags.

This is also a good place to mention that you're ordering seeds from one place or another... with shipping costs getting so high, it's really nice if you can add a packet for somebody else to your order (they'd reimburse you at the swap). If we get into a big group order, we can start a separate thread over on the group buy forum to help keep things straight. :-)

I know a couple of people may just keep lists on the side and not utilize the online tool, and some may simply bring their seeds to the swap. That’s fine! There are even a few people each year who come just to catch up with friends and “talk plants” with people whose eyes won’t glaze over in 3 minutes. It’s all good!

I'll post instructions below on finding and using the seed swap tool once I've set it up for this swap. Once you've put a variety on your list, remember you need to click the box to "activate" it for this swap. (The online tool saves the descriptions so you don't have to re-enter them for different swaps.)

The seed swap tool limits the number of requests you can make per day, especially in the first few days, and that helps "share the wealth." Have no fear, you'll have plenty of "dibs" before the swap, and there will be plenty of additional seeds on the day of the swap also!

Please respect the start date (TBA) and the way seed swap tool works. Don’t ask people to set aside seeds for you ahead of time, and don’t promise listed seeds to people before they have officially called "dibs" on a packet. You can use the “wish list” feature of the swap tool at any time to make note of seeds you’d like to put “dibs” on during trading.

Please use the tool to request seeds. The discussion makes this pre-swap-day trading fun and exciting, but making requests in multiple ways defeats the ease of using the swap tool. Use this thread to chat up what you have, ask questions, gauge the interest in a particular variety, or to say, “I just put dibs on your purple firecracker seeds, thanks so much!”

If somebody wants to offer seeds in a different way, that’s fine, but please be considerate and use the tool when requesting seeds from the online list.

Let's start talking about seeds!!

USING THE NGA SEED SWAP TOOL

Please don't be put off by the length of this post... I've tried to cover every step, and that always means more words!

A reminder to those who are using items from their general swap list... Remember to enable each variety you’re offering for our swap by clicking the checkmark. If it’s not green, it won’t be seen!

1. If you don't already have a screen name here, you'll need to sign up (it's free). Go to http://garden.org

2. Click on “Tools & Apps” at the top of the page (above the photo banner) and choose “Seed Swaps” from the pull-down menu. In the “welcome” box, you’ll notice that Dave has added a video link with his instructions on using the seed swap tool.

3. From the main swap page, click on “2017 Mid-Atlantic Think Spring! Swap." Clink the link to " Join This Swap," and then you’ll see “You are a member of this swap” on both the main page and on the page for our swap.

4. At the top of the page for our swap, you’ll see a “Your Profile” section. Click "Manage your swap profile." Add a brief description of yourself and your garden. This is also the place for your “wants list”, which can be very specific ("Purple-speckled Loonybird Vine") or general ("I love purple flowers").

5. Create your seed list for the swap by clicking "Manage your own swap list" under "Your Profile." Note that seeds aren't available for choosing until you click the checkmark at the left and turn it GREEN. Please try to get at least some of your seeds listed and enabled by Monday, Jan. 16.

You can also create a general list of seeds for use in this and other swaps by clicking the "Your Primary Swap List" button at the bottom of the "Seed Swaps" page. Then, when you "manage" your list for a particular swap, you click the checkmark for seeds you are including, and you'll see it turn green. Note that this is different from your NGA trade list – this is a specific list for use with the swap tool.

6. As people request seeds, they will be removed from your "available" number. You'll be able to see exactly what each person has requested from you. You may continue adding seeds to your list of offerings as we go along.

7. Although trading won’t open until 2 weeks before the swap, you can look through the items being offered at any time and “star” them to put them your wish list. Please do *not* make requests or promises on the discussion thread or on the side with regard to seeds on the swap lists. Let’s give the tool a chance to do its thing.

Of course, you can chat up seeds that you’re offering, mention things you’re looking for, or say thanks for something you’ve put dibs on… but let’s use the swap tool to make requests official.

8. We will start calling dibs on seeds from the seed swap list, on FRIDAY, JAN. 20. (I think the clock starts at 12:01 am Thursday Texas time). On the first day, you may ask for ONE item. On the second day, you may ask for TWO items, and so forth up until the day before the swap (when you may ask for 14 items). This feature of the seed swap tool spreads out dibs on the less numerous choices. Trading is very limited the first few days, but unused dibs “roll over,” and you’ll have plenty of “dibs” (105!) in 14 days.

9. You may “join this swap” after Jan. 20. Please note that if you are late signing up for the swap, you will still start with one request your first day, two your second, etc., even if everybody else is getting 10 requests by then. I’ll probably increase the multiplier to some absurd number a couple days before the swap so everybody can get advance requests in, even if they joined late.

10. Is there anything I forgot to mention? Smiling

*** PLEASE READ *** (also posted in main thread about the seed swap)

I've been mulling this over... I dropped the ball in not posting instructions sooner or encouraging people (including myself!) to get their seeds up on the list. My apologies for that!

Let's take the weekend to get our lists in shape and make sure everybody knows how to sign up and list seeds. Under "Tools & Apps" at the very top of the page, choose "Seed Swaps" from the pull-down menu. Then watch Dave's excellent video tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?... or read my post at the top of the seed chat thread: https://garden.org/thread/view...

I need to do some cleaning and packing and sorting, and then my list will be longer. Since it looks as though others may be in the same place, a couple extra days may help all around.

Using your swap list (where you enter seeds), the tradelist (where you look for and request seeds,), AND your wishlist (where you keep track of what you like) is the way to make the most of the swap tool, so let's get at it!

As seeds are added, you'll be able to look them up easily by clicking the hyperlink if the offer is for something in the database. If you see something you want, add it to your wishlist -- items with the most stars will be at the top of your list, and you can find them quickly once trading starts.

Even if you are not listing seeds using the tool, please SIGN UP here: https://garden.org/apps/swap/ That way, I know everybody has been able to access the swap, and you'll be able to put "dibs" on seeds in advance of swap day. Thanks!

You can build & manage your PRIMARY swap list via the link at the bottom of the main page (link above). Any time you join a swap (this one or another!), you can "enable" seeds for a swap by clicking the check box to turn it green.
As they say in culinary school, If it's not green, it won't be seen!

Our NEW START TIME is 7 pm MONDAY Jan 23.

To adjust for a later start, I'll increase the "multiplier" to 2. That means 2 tickets at 7 pm Monday, 4 on Tuesday, etc. The numbers will look like this: 2+4+6+8+10+12+14 = 56 "dibs" in the first week of trading... +16+18= 34 more "dibs" added the following Monday & Tuesday nights... and then I'll increase the multiplier to some insane number like 35 for Wednesday and Thursday, so even the latest latecomer signing up before 7 pm Wednesday can get in 105 dibs (the set "max" number).

I see from the swap tradelist that butterfly-attracting plants are popular wishlist picks, with tomatoes not far behind!

What are you hoping might emerge from people's seed stashes this year?

Does anybody need hybrid sweet pepper seeds like 'Carmen' or 'Gypsy'? If so, I'll do a quick mini group purchase thing and put together some $2 seed packs... otherwise, I'll order at my leisure. :-)

This is also a good place for questions about plants you see, since people may be growing it under very similar conditions to what you have available...

just a quick look at Hazzard's Seeds, where I often place an order around this time, shows me I could do

Gypsy sweet pepper (hyb) $2 packet = 16-17 seeds
Carmen sweet pepper (hyb) $2 packet = 10-11 seeds

I think I have enough to skate by for personal use this spring, so I won't order bulk unless there's interest -- and that's why I'd charge for them. Thanks for understanding that. :-)

editing to add, Fedco has slightly more expensive seeds for Carmen, but they are organic. Does that make a difference to anybody? (I figure it's more the way I grow the plant than the way the seed is produced, in terms of "healthy" food, although it's nice to support organic practices in general.) I'm not sure we have enough lead-time to get Fedco before the swap, but it would probably work. And I just saw that shipping from Fedco is FREE... so, actually, you'd get a couple more seeds per packet (13 for $2 on Carmen).

I was looking at 'Bouncing Bett' seeds in teh Fedco catalog... that's one of those "once you have it, you have it!" plants, except mine got shaded out a few years back. Does anybody grow it? I'd skip the seeds if somebody could yank up a plant or two for me this spring... Smiling

Fedco free shipping is for orders over $30. It's starting to look like I'll get there, LOL... so far I've got these in my cart, and I'm eyeing various greens & lettuces... Happy to share a few seeds to try or to split a larger packet for a bit of savings.
Hot Portugal Pepper
Thai Hot Pepper (also very ornamental with little upright peppers)
Bulgarian Carrot Pepper (hot and a wonderful bright orange color)
Calendula 'Zeolights'
Centaurea cyanus (bachelor buttons) Frosty Mix
Rainbow Lacinato Kale
Beedy's Camden Kale (overwinters, self-sows)

... and still browsing!

In addition, I really want to start using my Easy Sprouter again this winter. I think I'm going to order several seed mixes from Sprout People: https://sproutpeople.org/seeds... Anybody want to join in and see if we can reach free shipping? (need a $60 order, and looks like I'm pretty close to that at $48 in my cart).

If I put that order through, I'll have cat grass "special non-puking mix" to share. I'm also willing to split up to 1/2 pound from the mixes I'm trying, since a 1 pound bag is a lot. At the moment, I'm looking at:
Alfalfa (my favorite "straight up" sprout)
Spicy Mix
Spicy Salad
Sweet Pea Mix (peas and wheat)
Cat Grass (mix)

Just letting you all know that I am NOT going to use the "TOOL" I guess--I simply refuse to do so.
The only "TOOL" I use is a shovel and a rake. But--I want to let you all know that----

1--My "BIG BOX" of 60+ seeds (all self-collected) will be there--but I have not added any new seeds to it.
Most of the seeds in my "BIG BOX" are from about 2014 or maybe 20012.Still great for browsing--
especially if you are new to this swap or new to gardening. Many are of my seeds are very current.
So much fun to see what you can just grab and go.
The envelopes are very organized and easy to see what is inside. Just reach in and take a baggie or two.

2--I do have quite a number of new seeds from this past year. I can list them all here.
If you want--you can let me know what you are interested in and I will keep track of who gets what.
I will just drop it in your "Welcome" bag on the table where you come in.
As always--they will be in small baggies (2"x3"), labeled and a picture of said plant on the outside
of the envelope the baggies are in.

There are plenty to share of each kind. SO--feel free to browse and take whatever you want.
In my way of thinking--there is no need for me to list what I have--as you will be able to see them all--
in person and take what you want. Kind of more like a "Swap" in my mind.

No arguments please from the organizers of the "TOOL". I just do not comprehend how it all works.

See you all at the swap. OOOPS--almost forgot that there may be a gift table as well.
No one has mentioned it....Need to find something to put on it. It has always been customary to do this.

See you all at the Swap! Gita

Thanks, GT! I'll take that one off my seeds wish-list aka Fedco cart. :-)

Pre-swap-day trading is fun, but optional. Seeds in limited quantity may not still be available the day of the swap, but, as always, there will be plenty of seeds to sort through on the day of the swap.

The "gift table" info is with all the "general" information at the top of the main swap thread. Whistling

If anybody wants to add something to my Fedco order, please let me know. It's free shipping for $30+ orders, but $5 if you order just a couple of things... :-)

my Sprout People cart is also at free shipping, so lmk if you want to try anything from there!

Orders go in at midnight so stuff has 10 business days to arrive.

This is a big OH OH! I was looking in my bag with the lemon basil. I hope there are seeds in them. I am also not going to participate in the tools. I am looking forward what are available and maybe try out next year. Now I am just happy with the holy basil and the Thai basil and my own lemon basil. I had a lot of volunteers in my pots in fall. How do you get the seeds out from the hulls? Just shake them out and leave the hulls on the stems of the plants? I cut them all carefully and put them into bags, then get the stems out. But maybe no seeds in them????

Scroll halfway down my article on saving basil seeds, and you'll find some pictures and instructions.

Rub the pods between your fingers and they will release small, hard, black seeds.

Regarding the seed packets I'm offering at the Swap, I'll be glad to split up the packet contents. Seems that one gram equals 600-650 seeds.

hmm, it looks like trading is open, but I have zero tickets to use for "dibs." Has anybody else been able to make a request?

If not, be patient, I'll let Dave know and he'll fix the glitch. We haven't had any glitches the last couple of times we've used the swap tool (just changes we wished we could make), so this is odd.

I got an email from Dave this morning... this was related to an earlier bug he thought he'd fixed. I'm not sure where the glitch came from, but sometimes things like the big face-lift that NGA got recently have unexpected side effects! At any rate, it should go smoothly now, but if you notice any issues, LMK. Smiling
