I went to a local ace and saw one hummingbird mint. Their plants did not look good. I will probably try some seeds first before I buy the plant online. Does salvia have odors too?

Eric, You'll likely encounter some more Agastaches at other places, too. (Spellcheck wants to change "Agastaches" to "Stagecoaches"! Hilarious! )

Not all, but many Salvias have scented leaves. However, the range of smells found in the different species can range from the delightful fruity scents of pineapple or melon, to the decidedly less-delightful scents of turpentine or cat urine. Sticking tongue out

Salvia elegans is a nice species that will provide fruit-scented leaves, edible leaves for teas & more, and red blooms in late summer through winter that are favored by hummingbirds. 'Scarlet Pineapple' is commonly sold in the herb section and is easy to find, often just marked as "Pineapple Sage." 'Golden Delicious' was just added to the Proven Winners line so it should be very easy to find this year.

There are many more, but off the top of my head, other fragrant Salvias include Fruit Sage (Salvia dorisiana) and Grape-Scented Sage (Salvia melissodora) . Culinary Sages (Salvia officinalis) and Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) obviously have scented foliage, too, but the flowers aren't really that attractive to hummingbirds.

Does hummingbird mint have a strong odor, or you have to get close to the plant? Is it like some roses?

The scent of Agastache comes from the volatile oils in the leaves. You generally need to brush against them or rub the leaves to release the smell. If it's a really hot, dry day then you may be able to smell it some if standing very nearby. It is not a fragrance emitted by the flower to attract pollinators, like in roses. Hummingbird-adapted plants don't usually have a flower fragrance because hummingbirds have very little sense of smell.

Grape-Scented Sage (Salvia melissodora) does have fragrant flowers as well as scented leaves. I'm not sure how it performs in Florida, though.

This Salvia & Agastache cousin has fragrant flowers and is attractive to hummingbirds. It is a southern African plant so it wasn't adapted for hummingbird use, but they love it anyway. It can be hard to find for sale, though.

A few days at our local Kroger store, I picked up a hanging basket of Pelargonium (annual geranium) Caliente® Coral Salmon that I took out of the small plastic hanging basket and potted it up in a 20 inch container.

Also, picked up 3 one-gallon pots of Agastache Kudos Gold.

I really like the Caliente® Pelargoniums and the Coral Salmon looks really nice.
I especially like Caliente® Orange. I had it potted with Salvia coahuilensis (and other plants) one year and loved the colors together.

I really like the Caliente® Pelargoniums also.

The Coral Salmon color really caught my eye and I had to get it. It must be a newer variety, as it wasn't in the database, so I added it along with the Magenta and White varieties.

I found the Orange variety at Kroger 3 years ago. I'll have to look for it there the next time I go to Kroger's.

Your photo of the Orange is beautiful. I love all the colors together.

I purchased my first hummingbird mint plant from a local ace. It smells amazing. It has orange flowers. The worker there also told me they get other colors so I will be on watch for them.

It is called Arizona sandstone. I read online and it says it only grows 15 inches wide and high. I will be looking for larger varieties next time.

Eric,

Here's the database link for Arizona Sandstone.
Agastache 'Arizona Sandstone'

It will be shown as the featured Agastache Plant of the Day on the night of May 20.

Here's the main page (in the database) for Agastache (aka Hummingbird Mint or Anise Hyssops)

I am slightly perplexed by the plant. No bees no wasp. Nothing seems interested in it yet.

Maybe you'll have some hummingbirds, butterflies and/or bees on the flowers. Give it some more time. Thumbs up

I've never grown any of the Sandstone varieties, but the more I look at pics of Agastache 'Arizona Sandstone' the more I like the flower color.

@Danita,

I was at Kroger's today, spotted the bright color of Pelargonium Caliente® Orange geranium in a hanging basket and it went into the cart. Hurray! Thumbs up

Eric,

I haven't ordered Agastaches from both HCG and Almost Eden. Only from HCG. Maybe no one else has ordered from both companies, so they couldn't comment. I'm sure AE ships out nice Agastaches. I've thought about adding Agastaches to the order when I've placed orders from them before.

I ordered Kudos Red from Romance Gardens and I'm looking forward to seeing it in bloom.

I've grown Tutti Frutti before and love it. This spring, I ordered a Tutti Frutti also. Beautiful flower color.
