Untill last year I tryed to pollinate my lilies outside in my garden but last year I grew some lilies in my 10m2 big greenhouse and got plenty of seeds. This year I am growing too many lilies in there. And together with seedlings and some other plants it's a challange to be in there. Yesterday Lankon opened it's first flower. Have pollinated it but some say it's sterile. Any experience? Maby tomorrow L. daviidii maby opens. But I'm not able to get to it, too many lilies in front of it. I have to move some lilies to reach it's flowers.

My albino seedlings where found in Silk Road x oriental pollen.

If you have some seeds for me I'm quite sure that I am able to find a room for them.

Rick: I have 2 martagon seedlings with buds, the seeds are comming from you. The lables are gone but they are one of these: Lilium martagon 'Claude Shride'
Lilium martagon 'Terrace City' and Lilium 'Super Tsing'. I got the seeds in 2008.

That's fantastic, Grapus! And quite early flowering for martagons. Did you plant the seeds inside and get an extra year's jump on growth, or did you plant them and leave them outside? Yes the seeds I sent you were open pollinated, and from the three cultivars you mention.

a Couple of my earliest martagon seedlings are blooming now, and Claude Shride and Terrace City have just begun.

Anthony, congratulations on the Lilium callosum connection! I have found them to be quite vigorous and precocious from seed. I grew these from seed collected in Kedrovaya in the Russian far east in the little part of Russia that is between China and Japan.

They bloomed in the third year from seed, but had I taken better care it would have been earlier. There are twelve seedlings in a little3.5 x 3.5 x 5 inch (9 x 9 x 13cm) pot!

Buds are unique:

And the orange-red shade is one of a kind, too:

It's hard to tell from the pics, but the petal and pollen colors match exactly.

Wow, I really didn't think I'd get any response at all. To the "regular" flower lover they don't look that showy. But they are different, and I expect them to mature as a more unique form, too. Flowers should be larger once in the ground, although the species is normally small flowered.

Anthony, I suspect the main attributes for breeding with L. callosum will be for vigor and flower color. It usually has a more unique flower shape too: with very strongly reflexed petals that curl back tightly. This characteristic did not show up in my seedlings, but I think it will with more maturity. Unwanted characteristics might be height and long pedicels. The species is not closely related to any other lily, but most closely related to L. amabile. It might cross with a slew of other asiatics, so crossing it with just about any asiatic hybrid is worth a try.

If you provide too much phosphorous - middle number in the fertilizer - then it causes calcium and other deficiencies. The phosphorous binds with the nutrients and you get chlorosis. You cannot get rid of the phosphorous except by having plants use it up. To solve the problem, you should only fertilize with nitrogen (urea) or ammonium sulfate - something that has the first number and a 0 for the second number. You can get your soil tested for $30 at various places to confirm. I tried to test my own soil and my results were vastly lower than the lab results. I have the same problem - so glad I got the soil tested so now I know. It also affected raspberries and swamp hibiscus and my zucchini before I knew that the problem was me, and high phosphorous fertilizer. The solution, again, is to not put any phosphorous on your plants for probably 5 years and then only if you get a test result where your level is well under 70 ppm.
