Florida's DNR is quick to eliminate gators that might pose a threat. Back in SC the theme was live and let live and the gators were much larger. It would have been unusual to play a round of golf in the Lowcountry without seeing a gator or two. The Lowcountry represents the southeastern corner and coastline of the state.

I believe that man cared more about his buddy getting a video of him on Social Media with that gator, bet it would really get a lot of hits if that gator decided to turn towards the golfer. Green Grin!

Well, Alice it used to be that way here too, but unfortunately with 1000 new people moving here each day, the gators are losing out on their natural habitat. Florida FWC has no choice but to remove gators that people call freaked out about, and they have to be euthanized. I don't think people realize that they will not be re-located to another place when they call and complain. Sighing!

I find the gator encounters funny for the most part, I've had a few myself being a kayaker/hiker/camper...but I still give gators total respect when I see them Whistling

You and me both! I tried to talk sense to the parents of a young boy, about 6, who was tossing marshmallows to a gator on Kiawaw Island once and they essentially told me to mind my own business. I was horrified and called security and let them handle it. Some people are so dumb.

How about a trip down memory lane? @plantladylin I'm sure you went to the Serpentarium many times having grown up in Miami.
I remember going there twice. Dad hated the drive from Jupiter & the congestion in Miami.

This was the place for snakes. Remembering the Miami Serpentarium

Ann, you must be confusing me with someone else; I didn't grow up in Miami. I've been in Florida for almost 52 years but I grew up in Virginia and moved to Florida when I was a 19. Some of my family lived in South Florida for years and I visited them many times but EEk, I never went to the Miami Serpentarium ... I don't like serpents, little, big or any size in between. Oh sorry Lin, I guess it was just that your family lived in So FL for so many years. I think 2 of your sisters?

Yes, two of my sisters and their families lived there for a long time. One sister passed away ten years ago and the other (my oldest sister) and her husband retired here to Sebastian almost 5 years ago. Smiling

I don't usually go on this thread, but I saw the lead in about the huge constrictor... I am fascinated by reptiles and amphibians, I have been handling them for 60 years, (I am 65 years old), and I really like snakes. I thought for many years that I wanted a python until I saw a special about them on Animal Planet which scared the pants off me. The program centered on the Florida problem and also showcased attacks by people owned large pythons. The scariest part was statements from wildlife experts that stated that python were surviving the winters in northern Florida, and with global warming and that if the population is not brought under control, they could spread as far north as southern Arkansas as early as 2025! What is worse is that they are devastating the small mammal and bird population in the Everglades. It was estimated that 75 percent of the raccoons are gone. No, I do NOT want a python any more. The pythons were not deliberately released, but escaped during a hurricane, but the results are the same, destruction of native species and a danger to humans. One only has to look at what has happened in Australia to see the destructive results of non-native species in the eco system. I hope that Florida can continue to fight this huge problem, and know that other southern states support Florida in their struggles to remove this insidious threat.
Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.

I saw that on the news last night and I sure hope those pythons don't make their way this far north in the state! I was on a Sebastian Facebook page one day last week and someone posted a photo of a large Iguana they spotted near their home; one person said it was likely someones pet that got out, others told them to kill it while another said to trap it and another guy told them to leave it alone and let it live where it wanted, that wildlife was here before we humans arrived. Unfortunately some people do not realize that certain wildlife is NOT native here and pythons and iguanas are in the non-native, invasive group. I don't think I could ever live down south in the state where those huge Iguanas are everywhere and I really don't want to see Pythons! Blinking Blinking Blinking

Ask any gardener down south, they don't like those big iguanas, they have a very healthy appetite and love plants.

Did you all read the story of the woman and man attacked by a possible bobcat? https://www.wctv.tv/content/ne...

I know they're here where I live, many sightings, even a mom with two kittens. I've not seen any, but walk every other day where the sightings have been seen. They're really tearing up our natural habitat around here to build more and so the wildlife is being displaced.

Our neighborhood backs up to the western part of the Saint Sebastian River and also a conservation area, so Bobcats are common around here. At one time, a bobcat family was often seen coming and going from a wooded area next door to our neighbors but unfortunately the lot was cleared a few weeks ago and a home is now being built ... so the cats won't be seen there anymore. Sad Neighbors on occasion post photos of bobcats in their yards or walking down the street.

Another critter that has become naturalized in the entire state of Florida is the Coyote and we have them in the conservation area next to our neighborhood. Late winter is their breeding season and their vocalizations are really loud during that time. After the pups are born, we always hear lots of cute puppy yips. In the winter, I like to sleep with the windows open and I recall the first time I heard the shrill yipping, I was a bit confused because I knew that none of our neighbors had puppies and after listening a bit, I knew that the vocals were different from domesticated puppies and realized I was hearing coyote pups. I've only seen coyotes twice, about 15 years ago when I was visiting my mom down in Fort Lauderdale. The first time was when I was standing in my mom's driveway talking to my sister who was leaving to go home and a Coyote came walking down the next door neighbors driveway, stopped and looked at us and then walked on across the street to the back of my mom's neighbors house. Another time when I was staying with my mom, I was sitting out on her enclosed porch one winter night and the cat jumped up to one window and was watching something outside and I figured it was a neighbor cat but when I got up and went to the window, there was a coyote looking back at me ... well, actually it was watching the cat! The cat jumped over and began walking along the back of the couch under the long windows and that coyote followed every step the cat was making. There were a few free roaming neighborhood cats taken by coyotes and the sound when one was attacked was horrendous. Crying Another reason people should never allow their cats to roam free, especially at night!
