When we spent the summer in the NC mountains and had a bear in our area I would play music or the radio really loud as I walked the dog through the woods. It was not a terribly big bear but it was a bear none the less so I was super cautious. The week after we left NC the closest neighbors heard a noise on their porch and found the bear had broken through the screen apparently looking for food. There was none out there but they had been having breakfast out there earlier so they guessed the scent of food was still there. All the doors into their house were closed so it just walked around the porch and calmly left.

Sherri, if I ever looked up into the face of a bear you would have heard me screaming 3 states away. My husband would have been running for the valium not a camera. Hilarious!

About forty years ago I was squirrel hunting not too far from here( lived in this general area before), walking down a ridge on the side of a mountain, twenty two rifle in hand. The wind was blowing briskly, and blowing toward me.It was around noon, and the squirrels were resting. I wasn't trying to move silently, just crunching along in the fall leaves. Some feeling made me look up, there in front of me was a large black bear. I saw him, he saw me, and he grunted and raised up on his hind legs. I dropped to the ground and put my arms over my head, waiting for the attack. Time stood still, then I heard him drop down and amble away. When I could no longer hear him crunching in the leaves, I rose on shaky legs and ran for hell bent leather, as they say in the hills.I am not ashamed to say my pants were wet from the incident. Blinking nodding

Just goes to show you what outdoorsy people gardeners are. Of course we are going to run up against wildlife and we have some pretty good stories to show for it. Thumbs up

Wow, in Apopka!!!! That's a pretty decent sized bear too. Yep, lucky all it did was curiously sniff around. That'll teach them to lock the slider. Hilarious!

I'd like to get an outdoor security camera, not to see crime happening but to see what critters are lurking about during the night. Big Grin

I have a friend who got a good one. I will ask her (once again Whistling Hilarious! ) what she got. I'll get back to you on that. Pretty sure it was under $100 when she bought it a few years back.

Did you all read the story of the woman and man attacked by a possible bobcat? https://www.wctv.tv/content/ne...

I know they're here where I live, many sightings, even a mom with two kittens. I've not seen any, but walk every other day where the sightings have been seen. They're really tearing up our natural habitat around here to build more and so the wildlife is being displaced.

Good news the Bobcat attack was actually a raccoon. https://www.miamiherald.com/ne...

We have bobcats in Arkansas, but they are very secretive creatures. I have been in the woods all my life, and I have only seen them a couple of times. I have seen more bears than bobcats. I have even seen a couple of mountain lions, even though the Arkansas Game & Fish have said we don't have any. They have finally changed their official stance on that, due to so many sightings and film footing from so many game cameras. A local wildlife biologist has said they are coming into Arkansas from Colorado, following the Arkansas river into the state, looking for food. We have a huge whitetail deer population here, one of their favorite meals.

I think most wild animals are becoming more and more comfortable around neighborhoods. Their own habitat is shrinking so rapidly.

I agree Some animals are comfortable living cheek and jowl with humans, some are not. Some are dangerous, such as bears! Many wild animals require a large range in the wild; for example, a mature male black bears range is approximately 50 square miles. Of course we have always had the smaller mammals in our cities, such as possums, raccoons, groundhogs, and foxes.

The abundance of restaurant dumpsters and backyard garbage cans, most just chock full of leftover food, has brought black bears into downtown Asheville. I have posted these pics before, taken in my son's back yard. He keeps a spare freezer and they freeze all trash that may attract wildlife until pick up day.
