Semps are totally foreigh to me but I love these.I know they wont winter outside so I am transplanting the first 3 to one clay bowl container thats too shallow for any other plant.
The kalenchow will come it too but in something else.

My question is.Do you keep your semps outside all winter?

I move mine inside, well on to a screened porch... or garage,to keep them from getting wet then freezing hard,it will crack your pots . I had some strawberry semp pots ,But I sold them for a fund raiser ,moved them into the garage for winter, they got no light and did fine every spring..

Looky at what I just found, beautiful Blooms... Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! soo adorable and TinyThumb of 2012-08-05/huggergirl/871947

I leave my sempervivum outside all winter. I just put my containers up against the house.

Connie your bench is so whimsical and fun. I love you choice of plants. How old is the planting?
And how do you ever come up with the idea of the blue plastic chair? I never would have thought of doing that. I don't have any bright colored chairs like your, but I can go buy a can of paint and create a colorful chair. Hurray! Think I will try one for my shade garden, how fun it would be to come upon it in the little woodland. Lovey dubby

Hurray! Tamara I love your wild and playful rock garden, and the frog makes me laugh. Great mix of succulents in the yellow pot. Lovey dubby
I love the sedum in the frog pot. What is it.

Jo Ann, that is a most beautiful sempervivum in that first photo, I just love the color. I is winter hardy in your area. If the pots will hold up to freezing and thawing. They love the snow cover. Same for the second photo, which is a hardy sedum. The terra cotta would probably not make it through the winter, unless you have previous experience with them being outdoors for winter?
You are right about having to bring the other two plants indoors.

Good idea about putting the pots against the house Chris. Thumbs up

The bench was put together in 2006 but I made the "pillow" in 2005 and kept it horizontal for a season before poking it on there. Here are some sequential photos of the pillow construction:

I really do need to redo the pillow thingy, it doesn't look so swell anymore.

As for the chair, it is really ugly green, not blue. It was either do something with it or saw it up and work it into the garbage! The sedum tile came from Freddies; only 9.99!! Yeah, wish I had a woodland to put this stuff in instead of my baking backyard!

Connie, awesome bench! You did a great job!! Hurray! Hurray! It's holding in there really well if you made it in 2006. I can sure relate to wishing for a woodland instead of a baking backyard. What a brutal summer.

We hit 102 this last Sat. Sad

Connie the sequential photos are wonderful. I agree with Chris, amazing how well it has done over such a long time. And how funny about the color of the chair, when I look at it, it looks like such a wonderful sky blue.

Really, sky blue? My camera usually turns it to a greenish blue. Sometimes I take the time to adjust the color back to the ugly scratched up green.

It seems like the end of every season when the bench planting is looking really scraggly I tell myself I really should redo the whole thing. Then we get that long fall and winter and it seems to just renew itself in a beautiful way. All I did this spring was add a little more soil around the Kent Beauty oregano on the end. I really should go out and get another picture of it blooming now Smiling .

Here it is. Under better conditions these will do a great job of cascading over edges. They aren't succulents and like to have more soil than they get here but it still looks nice in the bench planter. Actually I don't know whether to call it on the bench or in the bench Rolling on the floor laughing .

Thumb of 2012-08-08/pardalinum/626995

I planted it there last year and it wintered over fine.

Love all the different coleus, Jo Ann. Fuchsias don't like a lot of heat. They grow well here in the Northwest and there is even a fuchsia specialty nursery not far from me. There are many cultivars available there either as rooted cuttings or larger plants. It is one of the nurseries I hit first in the spring to get my starts Green Grin! .
