Mike you should start and run your generator every spring for about 10 minutes to ensure it works when you want it to....

Those plants must be fifteen years old. In the ground makes them get really big, unless they go dry at times from great drainage and no rain.

And here's a laugh! The caudex was rotted, so I carved off the rot, and hung what was left. Then put it in nearly pure perlite, after root bumps developed when it was hanging. Just little feeder roots all around, then there's a tennis-ball size and shape--- What do you call that? A storage root?

Melissa I watched a video of some one who had one just like yours! He cut the top off about a half inch from the top of the ball root, then planted it in the most shallow of dishes in only about an inch of soil! I wondered what would happen to it if he had it outside and the smallest of breezes came by? But the after shot when it was in the fancy dish for two years it looked great. As shallow as the dish was he had huge drain holes in the bottom. It seems to have worked.

I do have to repot the one that I was going to cut, the pot disintegrated during our last big rain a week or so ago. It was in a very shallow pot, with mostly small gravel and charcoal and a little bit of dirt. That pot was one of the local clay pots, they are fired at low temps and don't last long. I'm going to put it in a concrete pot this time but probably one that is just as shallow. Keeping the pot shallow seems to help me keep them from rotting in our high humidity and heavy summer rains.

On other types of plants that seem to be developing rot, I have diluted hydrogen peroxide with water and used it to drench the soil, it seems to get rid of the rot. It also works on algae in my ponds. Doesn't harm the fish at the dilution I use and mainly it is just oxygenated water.

Good stuff, H2O2, but too strong and it can kill. I use, occasionally, 1/4 cup in 1 gallon of water..

Looking good Charleen, have you tried grafting yet, I bet in about a month you'll be learning to carve the caudex into various shapes. If I'm successful at my attempt at grafting, I'm going to try carving. I wish they had videos of some one actually carving, all I find is the plant after it's done.

Not yet. I wouldn't know what to graft to what Jim. but it sure is exciting watching the little leaves form from what all I did to them. i love it.

I hard pruned one of mine last week, it was the first time I tried it. It doesn't look like I killed it. Did I do it properly?

I left one branch because it had nice buds in it. I didn't have the heart to whack it.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to dust those cuts with some cinnamon.

Hetty, I just sprinkled the stubs with cinnamon, for good measure. Thanks for the tip!
