I'm going to have to vote for Autumn Red, now that I've seen a picture of it. It no longer looks anything like Crimson Pirate after seeing that one!

My tallest scape is 29" -- next tallest is 24-25"

That just makes it really hard for me to buy into Autumn Red

I've got plenty of daylilies that aren't as tall as they should be, but I'm positive that I've got the right plant. I know that it can also depend on where they are planted. I've got one daylily that I divided and moved to the front yard from the back. It's much taller in the backyard, and the one in the front has been there for 3 years now. The blooms are better in the front yard though. Keeps me busy scratching my head!

That's what I like - consistency in the plant world. Hilarious! Blinking Confused Rolling my eyes. Hilarious!

Can't find anything that identifies bloom size for Autumn Red. Any ideas?

Rolling on the floor laughing

I've got some of her pollen in the freezer, and about 4 more buds on the scapes, I think. I'm going to let them set seedpods, if they want to, just to see what comes out of them.

When last we visited this thread, Autumn Red was the best bet for what my unknown DL is... per the database, AR is dormant, and I checked this morning. My unknown is most definitely a dormant daylily. Thumbs up So it's just the scape size that leaves me not 100% sure of her name. We'll see how her scapes do this year.

Regardless of whether I ever learn her real name, she's one of my faves, and that's really all that matters, isn't it?

Mary, I have found two older daylilies that we grow have much taller scapes than those reported to the AHS. As a result, I am not surprised if a daylily does not perform as registered. Even with the differences in growing conditions and care, a scape should not be off 10 inches or more once it has had time to settle in and is given sufficient water and fertilizer, but that has been the case here with these two.

Gold Hibiscus (1992) registered with a 14" scape grows about 26" here. We have had this one several years and added more in the late summer.

Handsome Ross Carter (1993) registered as a 14" scape grew 27" and 28" scapes this summer. It was added in the spring. Bill Waldrop also grows it and his scapes were 24" the day you and I were at his house for the CCDS nominations committee meeting. This is the daylily he was trying to convert, and he showed us the dip version in the garden.

No doubt daylily growers have seen these registered heights and decided NOT to grow them because of the short scape heights. These are two very beautiful daylilies. Glad we didn't let the "short" scape heights scare us away!

See what your NOID does this coming summer after it has had more time to settle in and received water and fertilizer. Hopefully, your scapes will be much taller in 2013. I agree with Juli that it is very hard to ID NOIDS. Even if remains a NOID, you will enjoy the blooms.

She has foliage Thumbs up

Doris, I don't fertilize that particular section of DLs, so I don't know that will make a difference. However, she's been in the ground through 3 winters now, so that *should* make a difference. Autumn Red is listed as a mid-season, but I don't know what that means for us. Last year was the first year I paid any attention to my DLs as far as when they bloomed etc, and as we know, last year was abnormal in terms of seasons.

Frilly, what an awesome idea about buying a plant that is known to have the correct name on it, to compare to what you think you have! It's kind of one of those things that is so obvious that I'd never think to do that! You're a genius!

Just jumping in with a couple I also bought at a box store several years ago, first was sold to me as Autumn Red and the second was sold as Crimson Pirate. Bought these years ago before I started marking everything. Will look up another one that was similiar called Big world. Need to find a picture if that one. Pakages were all marked down at the end of the season and I am sure they were mixed up. Thumb of 2013-03-11/doglover/975114 Thumb of 2013-03-11/doglover/3fa165
