This hardy waterlily pond is completely overgrown.

Thumb of 2017-06-26/psa/10fb55

I've tried to dig in there to thin it, but there's a fibrous root mat over and through everything and it's hard to find anything that looks like a substantial tuber. There were several different varieties in there at the beginning, but I think two of them have taken the rest over.

In my whisky barrel size pond, I keep mine in pots and divide every two years. They still fill the pond.

6'x8' pond, so just big enough for four small water lilies. They were each in 12" containers, and then they grew over the edges of the containers and into the debris around them. Two more years on and I don't know what to do with the intertangled root mess. Sticking tongue out

Hmmm. Get a helper to help you lift the whole mess out, and a big, sharp knife to separate the pots, cutting off roots at the bottom of them?. Mine grow out the drainage holes at the bottom of the pots. Divide by cutting the rhizomes in pieces, making sure there are at least two eyes on each piece, and repot. All this while dormant, of course. That's how I do it, but I don't wait more than two years, and I can only get two in my barrel sized pond. These plants are tougher than you think.

Perry's Baby Red blooming today. The Blue pickerel is as well. Look at the difference between the little garden since late April. I had to remove most of the hyacinth because of the growth of the lily and the Mosiac plant

Perry's Baby Red is a cutie, and looks very nice amidst the mosaic.

I had two huge lotus blossoms about to open when we were hit by an unusually (for us) violent thunderstorm. When the buds opened, one dumped all of its petals immediately and the other kind of fell open. Normally these 10-12" flowers last for several days.

Thumb of 2017-06-30/psa/115276

As you can see, this bloom got whipped clear out of the lotus pond and lodged in the rose and echinacea next to it, though the five foot stem still extends back into the pond behind. The streaks of green are unusual, too. There's still another bud on the lotus, so we'll see what that one brings in a few days.

Just remember that this is an annual. Price is very reasonable but it will have to be replaced. It also needs full sun. Both of these "downsides" are more than offset by the beauty of the plant.

This blue lily is the tropical 'Lindsey Woods'. The flowers are on the small side, usually about 2 1/2" to 3", but there have been one or two flowers open every day since mid May. This is a new plant for me but I am told it is reliably hardy in my area. I do add 2 fertilizer tabs to the pot every month.

The pink is the hardy N. 'Wanvisa'. A beautiful, large flower with speckles and stripes but it is a very shy bloomer. I am lucky if I get a bloom every few weeks.

Just been playing catch up. Love the water lily photos. I'll see if I can find N. Lindsey Woods for our zone 10a pond - I gave up on tropical blues because they always faded away over winter, but I love them so am very happy to hear of one that might survive. Also really like 'Midnight'. Lovey dubby

Here's one from our pond in France that I uploaded today to the DB:

@TennesseeDave my goldfish are eating my water lily, so I want to get a set up like yours for it. How big is that container you're using?
