I agree Drooling I have a tropical just about that color but this year the goldfish have taken to eating the leaves as soon as they emerged. They have not bothered the hardy ones, it is very strange.

Great color, Paul. What is the name, and is there a dwarf variety?

Panama Pacific, I believe. Definitely one of the easier to grow tropicals for me.

These water hyacinth are nutrient export for me this year. Every week or two I remove a couple wheelbarrows full of plants and layer them into the compost. Crazy prolific, but beautiful when they bloom.

I do the same and compost is free fertilizer.

Wonder if you can help, Paul? I bought 3 water hyacinths for our little pond in the Spring. All three promptly bloomed a week or so after I placed them into the pond. Since then, they have multiplied so much, I've had to remove bunches of them several times (which I also place in my compost pile), but since those first blooms, there have been no further blooms. Any thoughts on what might be keeping my hyacinths from blooming?

I have no idea what triggers water hyacinth to bloom. Mine hardly bloomed in July, but have been blooming quite a bit the last couple weeks. I keep meaning to go look it up.

I found a YouTube video that mentioned that too much fertilizer will make them send out new plants and not bloom. Only when the fertilizer levels are low will it bloom...trying to produce new seed. Obviously, fish provide the fertilizer.

This is the lotus in my perennial garden (35 gallon preformed sunk into the ground and filled with this plant growing in muck under 4" of water. Stocked with goldfish for mosquito control and topped off by sprinklers).

We got our first freeze here this week, so I'm putting away the tropicals and preparing the pond for winter. However, I have this one leftover set of pictures to share that I was holding onto, hoping for one last bloom that wouldn't get as crispy before I got a picture. Nonetheless, it is a really unusual one:

This is 'Detective Erika', and it's a hardy/tropical cross that's still pretty limited in supply.

I'm in in Western Australia.

Each Winter what I call Wood Ducks, they nest in trees, fly in. They nest in some Pinus pinaster trees on my property.

Obviously they have carried a payload in recent years as the plant in the Photo, has grown.

Any idea of what species it is?

Can supply some close ups of flowers and single reeds, have removed the plant from the tank.

Cheers

Just a guess buI it might be one of the Juncus varieties. Try a google search of Juncus images and see if any look familiar.

Thanks, have tried the local FloraBase but there is unfortunately a dearth of photo's there.

I did google Juncus but found nothing familiar. Did however come across an Australian site selling Juncus species and will try them shortly.

Cheers

Nothing blooming right now for me. Hopefully we will be starting up next month. Start up can be anywhere from early March to mid April.

Water Hyacinth bloom for me July -August. I never had a problem getting them to bloom, however, I have always planted water hyacinth in pea gravel so they don't end up in my skimmer. I know when I had tried just letting them float in the pond before, they never flowered.
