My GH has very few thorns and no prickles. It's a lovely rose.
Always seeking recommendations and advice. I welcome suggestions for heat loving roses with great scent, disease resistance, and long vase life.

I'm going to get rid of GMH, it's the only one that is proned to blackspot and then it spreads to other roses.

What will you put in its place? My two tea roses by GMH are thriving. Do you have a favorite tea rose to recommend?

No, I'm going to move an Itoh peony here. This one had 16-17 flowers last year, this year I might have to divide and move it here. I don't know if Olivia Rose Austin is a hybrid tea or not, but I'm getting that one base on its health, slowly I'm going to get rid of roses that don't flower frequent and have problem like GMH. It might do well somewhere else but not in my garden, and it barely produces flowers.

Love my Olivia Rose Austin, but it pales in comparison to PAoK in my garden.
Can't believe you're growing peonies that bloom! I am so envious.

PAoK is oK in my garden, but this is a second year.
I like peonies more because they are thornless, itohs are very easy to grow here.

[quote="seilMI"]Unfortunately a lot of DA roses tend to need a lot of water here in the USA. Not all of them but many. They're bred and tested in jolly old DAMP England, not the arid Southwest. I can tell you that Golden Celebration and Graham Thomas are both water hogs here in humid Michigan. I also have Queen of Sweden and Jubilee Celebration and haven't noticed this as much with them. [/quote

Hello seilMI. Just browsing and I came upon your post. I have always thought that the US was an ideal home for roses. Silly me! I totally overlooked the vastness of America. I chuckled when you said, jolly old damp england. Yes it does rain a lot here, however come the summer months. We usually end up with hosepipe bans. Perhaps our water authorities should be run by gardeners.

A close friend recently undertook a study of rose diseases at Bath University. England. He discovered that. Prior to his demise. DA would get all his staff out in the fields just before Christmas, and every remaining rose leaf had to be removed. So this answers any questions of why DA roses are always looking good at sale time.

So. Back to your problem. How do you deal with it? Albeit I am an 81 yr old and long retired. I am a rosarian and a plant pathologist. I'd love to strike up a friendship with rose growers across the pond. Sincere best wishes.

Hello Growmore!

The US is very big and has so many different growing conditions from arctic to tropical. I know the UK has different areas as well though. I've just found that here in my Great Lakes garden the DA roses tend to need watering more frequently than the other roses. They also get bigger than they say in the DA catalogs. If it says 4 ft I know it can go to 6 or 7 feet here. So I always leave extra room for them and find trellises to put them on. I'm sure it's because of the difference in soils and growing conditions. I'm usually a frequent waterer anyway so it isn't a big problem but I do keep a special eye on Graham Thomas because he is always the first one to show signs of water stress. In July and August he can wilt dreadfully if it gets hot and dry for a bit.

I've found that keeping things watered is THE most important thing. I had a very bad health year a while back and could do hardly anything in the garden. The roses only got water. No fertilizer at all for the entire year. They did just fine! In fact the ones that had gotten the most water did the best and had really good growth and bloom. So if you can do nothing else just keep the roses watered!

Hi there, Growmore. Always happy to talk about roses and plants. Welcome to the Board. I have pretty much given up on DA roses for where I live. They just don't do well with the heat we get here. Of course, that being said, there are a couple of exceptions. Pretty Jessica and Mary Magdalene do very well here along with an older DA rose, Peach Blossom. Munstead does OK as does (so far--it is still a newer rose for me), Jubilee Celebration and Princess Alexandra of Kent. Brother Cadfael hates the heat here but his scent is to die for. My best smelling rose for the past 26 years.

I still have one of DA's first roses, Emily, that I keep for sentimental reasons. My Lady of Shalott got shovel pruned this year as did my Sharifa Asma. Second shovel pruning for Sharifa. Will I ever learn??? Many, many more DA roses have been shovel pruned over the past 25 years or so.

Hello. Zone 10b, Ventura County, southern California here.
I'm looking for roses that do well in shade. I have a spot that gets four to five hours of afternoon sun, but mostly shade the rest of the day.
I'd prefer roses that are disease resistant as I have been fighting rust this year. I 'm looking for fragrance and good cut flower life.
I avoid orange, but all other shades are welcomed.
I also have a shady spot for a few HPs. My Monsieur Tillier and Souvenir de Victor Hugo are doing well in this shady spot, and I have room for a few more.
Thank you in advance for your help.

I highly suggest you go to Otto and Son's Nursey in Fillmore since you are so close.
They have their annual Rose Days this year April 14, 15, 16, 17

Agree with Calsurf73 (Mike) that you need to go to Otto's during their Rose Days if you've never been. It's one of the most amazing rose experiences, just to walk their fields of potted roses in bloom.
As for shade-tolerant teas, I love my William Allen Richardson climber, which grows on the north side of a 6 foot wooden fence. It doesn't get huge, but despite being in the shade from late fall to early spring, blooms on and off the rest of the year.

Hi there Oak, I am very hesitant to recommend any HP's for you as my growing conditions are so different than yours. Plus, I tend to not get fungal diseases here and my HP's also tend to be in full sun. So take everything with a bit of a large grain of salt. Hopefully Jeri will respond as her growing conditions are similar to yours.
So far, my favorite HP is Vick's Caprice. He is an absolute charmer. In researching Mr. Vick (the "breeder" of this rose), I found out all sorts of interesting information and got to read part of his diary from the late 1800's. He and Charles Dickens were boyhood and life long friends. There are still streets named after him in NY where he had his seed company. I find this stuff fascinating, so please bear with me.
Vick is a stripey rose and absolutely gorgeous. He does like to get big, so give him plenty of room.

Other HP's I have are Souvenir de McKinley, Portland from Glendora aka Johasine Hanet, Yolande de Aragon, and (eventually) Schon Ingeborg. I have been waiting two years for Schon and hope the rose will be sent to me in October. I did see a video from a rose grower in Vancouver Canada and Schon is one of his favorites. It might do well in your area.
Souvenir, Johasine and Yolande are very young and so I am still waiting to see how they will do with the types of growing conditions I have here. Any or all of them may eventually get removed depending on how they do. I did have to remove Marquise Boccella as I got the climbing version of Jacques Cartier instead and in one year this rose threatened to take over my yard. I don't have the room for a monster rose, unless I only grow one rose.
I know Grandmother's Hat tends to do well in your area and is one of Jeri's favorite roses. She is a beaut and may eventually replace one of my other hybrids. I wish I had room for her.

Thank you so much!
I purchase often from Otto and Sons. Wish they knew which, if any, of their roses are growing on their own roots. Regardless, it has a great selection and it's close by.
I have two healthy Tea roses and probably should try to find a few more for that semi-shade area.
I love your recommendations, especially Vick Caprice, as Vick is my married name. I will check out your recommendations. I guess if Grandmother's Hat likes that locale, your suggestion just might do well.
Once again, thank you so much.
BTW, I just fed the front yard roses with Mills Magic. Haven't used it in the backyard where our dog has free reign. Anyone know if this is attractive to dogs, or should I find a liquid feed?

I have to be honest. Here in the UK. DA roses are very popular, however for me....too costly. I believe that many of us mortals make the same mistake. For instance. We buy a rose because something about it appeals to us. We may have strucked lucky and the rose grew and we were happy. So next time. We tend to go back and buy again from DA. The saga continues. In time, we realise that we are buy a name. This is very much akin to perhaps our choice of music. We follow the name.

Here in the UK. There are so many rose growers and nurseries. Trust me. The big names are not always the best. Been there. Tried them. etc. Especially since my beloved wife passed away. I re-designed my tiny garden as a memorial to her. I have spent, to me, lots of money on roses. Making purchases from the top growers to the humble back street grower. After seventy years of rose growing. I am still learning.
