I see that only a few have wishlisted my unknown zinnias so I thought I would show them off a little more. Smiling
They really were beautiful to look at all summer long and into the fall until the temps dropped below freezing.

Oh those Zinnia are lovely!!

Phew! Finally got in the majority of what I had Hurray!

I did list some basil that I can't for the life of me remember which it was! So its either the Spicy Globe or Dwarf Greek varities, definitely a smaller cultivator. D'Oh! Next year I'll have to keep better records of what I planted where.

hey Diana,
Those "Kiss Me over the Garden Gate (Persicaria orientalis)" you just added, are they in the amaranth family? They look like a super visual addition but also like they could take over the little space I've been designated as mine...

Karen,
You are thinking of the Amaranth "Love Lies Bleeding". However, "Kiss Me over the Garden Gate (Persicaria orientalis)" is just as big. It is a member of the buckwheat family.

Diana,
I love KMOGG. I've only successfully germinated it twice. I've made attempts the last three years with no luck, trying both the baggie method and stratification. Surely it's just me. My seeds have come from commercial and trading pal sources. Any tips?

My KMOGG used to reseed on its own...I had a variegated one and never saved seeds for myself and now it's gone Sighing!
I'm guessing the do need the cold stratification.

@poisondartfrog.

I grew the variegated one, I adored that plant!

I had it planted around the right side of my pool. This area is where the concrete slab for the filter was and it would flood and have an inch or two of ice all winter. I had so many reseeds that I offered them for postage on the GW.

Well, the next year we removed the pool. I moved 1 plant to grow elsewhere. It grew and produced seeds. I'm sure I shared in swaps BUT I never got it to grow again {sorry to anyone I shared with}. It didn't reseed where it was so I too lost that beautiful plant.

This will sound crazy but for those of you with seeds. I would put them in a NON draining container, add an inch or two of soil to the bottom, let the soil freeze and then add an inch or two of water to freeze on top for the winter. This is the one and only time I got them to come up..

Alana - I had the opposite experience to Lisa. I grew it in my zone 9 home (yes, we'd think it was "cold" and heat our homes in the winter). Most people would say just chilly. Anywho, thought it was easy like morning glory. I vote - if you have enough seed - to just direct seed it somewhere now. Checked and Select Seed is one of those who popped up and recommends planting in situ. I'd heard it didn't transplant well so go along with that. The similarities between me and Lisa would be wet - my old area would flood in the streets in a wet winter and the ground stayed pretty wet. It grew fine with a dryer spring and summer but was definitely moist through the winter.
Remember, it is dangerous to the environment and ILLEGAL in MANY states (CA is one) to mail plants/bulbs/cuttings in. Let’s all practice Do No Harm while we walk this earth and find other ways to connect to one another through gardening.

ok folks,

Here's a bit of an odd request... I'm currently renting a basement in my SIL's house (helps explain some of my other posts...) anywho, She has extreme phobia of ALL things flying. Birds, bees, butterflys, flies, etc. She has given me areas of the yard that I can do what I want with. I plan on many veggies that don't necessarily need pollinators, leafy greens, tomatoes, peppers, and such. I'd also like to put in some flowers, but I want to respect her fears and not plant things that are huge attractors of pollinators. I know this is contrary to most gardeners goals and philosophy.

Does anyone have any recommendations for some nice flowers that don't really attract insects?

I'd love her to be able to enjoy her yard and not go into a panic attack every few minutes. I've thought of planting some things in a far corner of the yard that she doesn't venture into anyway to help draw insects away from her main porch area, but I don't know if that would really just bring them into the yard in the first place.
