Comparatively few are selected for further evaluation. Some are selected to go to the greenhouse for cut flower evaluation. Others are selected for garden variety evaluation; I think he said three years outside. There were two other categories but I forget what they are. Non-selected ones are composted as they should be to keep no-names out of the market. The selected ones are growing all over the place, sometimes on the outer edges and sometimes deep in where one can expect to get a lot of pollen on their clothes if they want a closer look.
This operation is really not big at all. Two modest sized greenhouses; one for seedling starts and one for seedling evaluation. He said he is cutting back on seed starts, a bit each year. He can get where he wants to go with fewer seedlings. I would say the outside field is less than two acres, but they are packed in pretty thick. I really don't know the width between the rows or the rows themselves. You can kind of guess from my last photo.
