Thanks for the info Alex.

I believe that every year(?) Lynn holds a semp sale, so I will definitely be looking forward to that, and see if maybe I can buy some semps from her that are hardy to our climate.

We just moved to SD a few months ago, and have no family or friends here, so unfortunately I do not know any semp gardeners (or gardeners in general) to ask about local semp shops.

I'm looking forward to new semps, too early to buy, but not too early for a wish list!

The snow was beautiful and just in time to give my son a white Christmas. He's stationed in Mississippi and misses the cold winters.
I got what I wanted for Christmas, both my son home on leave and my husband not working either Christmas or Christmas eve. I wanted to sit around a tree together, eating cookies and watching "its a wonderful life". I got that, it's been a long time.

Most of the snow is melted now. I checked the semps that were visible, they looked good. All purple and little, but good. I am so looking forward to the garden this year. I have a mountain of compost finishing, a wish list, and a shovel. I wonder if I would appreciate gardening as much if I lived in the south where I could grow things all year.

Julia I couldn't find anything on calcareum from La Bernard. Couldn't even find a scientific article on it. Where did it come from?

Johannian the only thing I found in Rapid City is a garden center that carries a handful of sempervivum. No luck finding an actual specialty source. When shopping at nurseries/garden centers be sure to research the accuracy of the semps they are selling. Also check the back of the Chick Charms semps to make sure you aren't duplicating something you mat already have, the original name in on the back of the tag.

Sharen you got the best ever Christmas gift, loved ones around you. Lovey dubby

Just a reminder of all the great sources of semps we have here in the United States:
SMG:https://www.smgsucculents.com/
Perennial Obsession: https://perennialobsessions.co...
Mountain Crest Gardens: https://mountaincrestgardens.c...
Young's Garden Center: http://youngsgardenshop.com/
The Sempervivum Patch: https://sempervivumpatch.com/

A few of our members here do occasionally sell plants.
Springcolor (Julia) is one of them.

Ok, thanks for the information Lynn. Much appreciated Thumbs up

I can't wait to get some new semps, and start off fresh. I do feel really bad though, for almost all of my original semps have died out. I only have one left Sad

But guess what? My remaining semp got buried in snow!
Let's hope it really helps her.

Johannian, I am so sorry to hear you've lost most of your semps. That was a difficult move. Hopefully this last survivor will make it.
Now you will be on a journey to learning how to grow them in South Dakota. This may be a big learning curve.

Lynn,
Not sure where this came from, thinking Cynda.
I found this
https://www.semper-vivum.de/se...

of course this one I have looks nothing like the picture. Mines more like Fire Dragon.

Yes, I'll be selling this spring.
I get plants from Lynn, sempervivum Patch, SMG, Patty and Perennial Obsessions. Other people on this site too.

Have any of you had experience from buying on garden.org? I've never done this, and I think this will be a better place to buy plants Smiling

I'm not sure where to start my sempervivum collection from, because right now I just have a buncha noids and an odd oddity.

Hi Alex-

"goldfinch4" (Chris) sells nice semps and I've had great luck with her and a few different orders from her.

Julia here is what Erwin stated on his site about Sempervivum calcareum cf. ex LA BERNARDE PH1155
"We are not yet sure whether it is not a S. tectorum clone. The growth is not typical S. calcareum. We will wait for the flowering. However, we received it from a Sempervivum connoisseur. The boulder forms medium-sized rosettes with long drawn leaves. Overall an interesting form."
Cynda gets plants from Europe on occasion. This particular one is not verified as a calcareum yet. They are waiting to see blooms before making a decision.
Thank you for the link. Thumbs up

Alex, like anywhere else, research the seller. Easy to do here in our classifieds. Sellers are usually part of a community here on NGA.
Julia and I sell through the classifieds here at NGA. And Chris (goldfinch4) / Sempervivum Patch is also a member of our community.

I haven't seen any of Julia's sales yet, but I know for sure that Lynn has a huge selection when she starts selling.

Johannian, my selection will be very small this year because of the move to a new plant. And a decrease in cultivars due to less space to grow in. Sad

Johannian,
Feel free to peruse my plant list to if you'd like, it's been a while since I've done an update, but anything I have listed as "Available for sale" is probably an option. I'll also be downsizing my seedling beds this spring so if your looking for a value buy on a nice big batch of interesting NoID's go ahead and let me know.
Julia has some fantastic plants and I would highly recommend looking at her stock first, but you can always tree-mail me to. Jo Ann (ricos) might be in the market to sell as well.

I sometimes buy semps in winter as some retailers continue to ship year-round, but it's definitely a dangerous time of year to plant. They establish much slower, and rot has a good chance of taking advantage of that if you don't provide some extra moisture protection. I pot my late fall/winter buys up in a sunroom where they stay till the weather starts to mellow or I feel they're established enough to handle the wet and the cold.
