I am sure us "old timers" have lot of trivial tucked away in our heads. I was on a local radio station sharing my recollections of the nurseries in the Santa Cruz area in the l940's and 50's. It was six appearances and was fun to do.

As a sidebar to the 88-180P. It didn't bloom the first yr. as seedling, but the non bloomers were held over since the cross showed promise. It bloomed the next year on a short stalk but it got my attention quickly as something different from a different breeding: Notorious X 86-30G: (Success Story x (Fancy Tales x Alpine Castle) ) x ((Persian Smoke x Entourage) x (Strawberry Sundae x (Artiste x Tupelo Honey) x Borderline sib)))) x Romantic Evening). Bill Maryott came over to put "rags" on the seedlings that would be "commercial". I would give them to him to grow in San Jose (at this time I was growing my seedlings in some 7 backyards of friends and relatives). This was my grandmother's backyard. Anyway I didn't point 188P to him, waiting for him to find it. He passed it right by. After he was done with his rags, I brought him to 180P and told him, "see what you missed". He sort of shrugged his shoulders. And I told him, one day I'm going to make you eat your words! Well today 88-180P progeny are many, including Starring (which has it's own backstory).

Speculating, I believe that the genetic pool for the L&S line comes thru Fancy Tales since it appears on both sides of 180P. Also similar material in the Hamner material,

Love the luminatas, especially the dark one, though there are some dark ones being intro'd lately. Keppel has a dark BB I love, but he says it is too close to Dark Universe (I think having it in a shorter form would be great). I hope similar iris don't sway hybridizers away from introducing some of their own. I say this because some hybridizer's iris do better in some areas than others. Hypothetically Hybridizer Al and Hybridizer Dan could both introduce a yellow and white TB with red beards. Al's grows well on the west coast, PNW and the north but struggles to grow in the south and east. Dan's thrives in the humidity of the south and east. Yes, they may look very similar BUT only one can be grown well by part of the iris buying population. (Sorry for the ramble. Nothing is more frustrating than having an iris you love the looks of die at every attempt to grow it).

Leslie, a really good point! Even some PNW hybrids are problematic here.

Thanks for sharing, Brad! ALL beauties, Joe! I think my favorites are A & C. A appears to glow, and the colors on C are so vivid.

Wow, what a fun rabbit hole!
I have been looking at parentage of sooooo many different lined iris (our database is really cool the way it's set up to allow that) and 88-180P is the nexus!

You deserve a medal Joe I tip my hat to you.

I do taken probably last year and had posted it, but can't find it right now. Will repost if I find it. Interesting I had extra stock of it and listed it in the catalog "for sale" at $25 and sold all the available stock quickly. It was 30 plus rhizomes. You will now find it in some others pedigrees along with 93-3, a Starring type child I sent along as a gift. It turned out to be the progenitor of the standard halo pattern. jjg

Page 2 from the 2021 catalog Big Grin although Joe will never introduce this many in a year it doesn't hurt to ask Green Grin! was always taught a closed mouth will not get fed nodding and we may need runner up's just in case were a little short on Stock on the others previously shown.

The next from the Line and Speckle pattern Smiling one our favorite Oranges from home has been Joe's (Winning Hand) we have enjoyed it for years since introduced and this one shows how far he has come with the form in the pattern an intense color when viewed up close in the garden complete with the wide falls and show stems Lovey dubby will make a great addition.

Another Iris that receives many compliments at home from garden visitors is My Beloved something about a pure white flower amongst lots of different colors really shows it's beauty and makes it pop and stand out this next selection would have the same description but a step further in the advancement of form probably has My Beloved in the Pedigree somewhere as it is in a league of it's own as a parent Smiling have bloomed many white seedlings the past few years and none as pretty as this one. It is a stand out !

There are a number of very good Orange's that Joe will have to pick through in the coming years in lot's of shades and I would be happy to have all of them Grin but I'm in need of some Border Bearded or things on the smaller side to work with so this selection helps with that it very much reminds me of the color's in Fixation Lovey dubby for those that grow it and as you can see from the pictures it's the whole package and perfect for the front row.

A Hybridizer's goal should be to come up with unique colored plants something if you lost the tag for it would be easily identified when it bloomed this one fit's that description nothing else like it very beautiful colors on the falls when it 1st opens and look's like a blooming machine with all those stalks Lovey dubby would like to see what the next generation brings in this pattern on the falls.

I remember seeing this one amongst the rows and thinking Wow Drooling Lovey dubby what a show !! It is jaw dropping in a clump and looks to be loaded with Buds and of course the Ghio show stems was wishing it was at home in my seedling rows had instant twitchy fingers standing there at Joes wanting to play with pollen nodding nodding and spread this one all over lot's of things.

The sibling to the C shown on the previous page and only slightly different in coloration note the beards are a different color and it is a couple shades lighter of pink, absolutely stunning and another that was a blooming machine look at the clump picture Crossing Fingers! one of them makes it in the future very unique color blends.

I missed this one somehow this past spring as there was so much to go over in the new seedlings and such little time but it was on my Ghio watch list from last year Smiling as one that was very good sometimes the Beard's can make the flower and they jump out at you on this one something about the pink flush up the standards and the beards really tied the whole package together especially in the clump pictures Smiling
