Thanks all for your words of encouragement!
I haven't looked REAL closely at the entire inventory..those big yellow leaves just stood out
from the pack. I do have something that looks like sooty mold but doesn't rub off like sooty mold
on some of the plants. Greenville is famous for the humidity here and the rain hasn't helped..I
absolutely MUST get one of those clear tarps that Kathy has and figure out a way to rig it up on
the side of the greenhouse for next year.

I should mention that I see more rot in plants sitting on the racks than I see on those hanging from the ceiling of the cage. A little breeze seems to dry the hanging plants better.

Getting paranoid here, I did find a couple of dark spots on one of my Catts yesterday - the whole place reeks of cinnamon now! We're expecting rain tomorrow, so I'm moving everyone to shelter tonight. Last thing I need is heavy rain splashing any fungi around.

Here's my rack of nursery plants (formerly a soil sifter my DH made) sitting in the summer camp spot. There's a mister on a timer here so everyone gets misted when I'm away.

Luckily for me, the breeze blows around there really well, and of course I don't have nearly as many or as large plants as Lindsay has.

beautiful plants Elaine...great color and they all look really happy in that spot!
I wish we had breezes in the summer...just humidity. Sometimes the dew stays
on the grass all day, even in full sun!

It does that here if the wind doesn't blow, but it almost always does, thanks to our proximity to the Gulf.

I have started to bring my Cattleyas inside.
I did have some black rot this Summer as I had mentioned. Now except for one plant, none of the hanging plants had any of that. All afflicted plants were sitting on the back wall bench of the cage, and I suspect they simply did not get enough aeration, also there was always room between the Orchids.
I am happy to report that on some of the Cattleyas which had surgery, the live eyes on older growth started sprouting a new lead. So all was not lost.

I'm curious about Dr. Lindsay's surgery - did the victim survive without further signs of blackness so far, Lindsay?

We haven't had any rain, the humidity is way down
and the breezes are way up! I have a good feeling
that this plant will make it...fingers crossed!

Isn't it kind of soon to tell? I don't see any new root activity yet, which would make
me feel a lot more comfortable that this plant was out of the woods.

Some of mine have pouted for a month after re-potting, Lindsay. You not only re-potted, you did major surgery, and had a weather change too!

I wouldn't get worried yet. I would keep sprinkling the cinnamon on any of the cuts that have not completely dried, though.

My tiny little Lc. 'Jungle Eyes' lost another leaf, so it only has one left. I think maybe I've lost that one. Caught it too late and we've had no relief from humidity yet. Sad

Ok, I have another plant...
is this the same problem as above? Too much water, summer temperatures too high & not enough air circulation = fungal problems?

This is Dendrochilum glumaceum?
Yes, I would say the pot is a bit big, it doesn't look too happy all around.
If that were me, I would take it out of its pot, trim away all dead stuff and repot into a smaller pot. I find Dendrochilums are quite happy with a bit of loosened Coconut fiber about their roots, no other medium needed then.

Ursula, just curious, on the Dendrochilum above, would you remove the yellowed pseudobulbs as well?

Btw, Lindsay how's the other patient coming along? Any progress?

I did remove those p.bulbs as they were mushy and I knew they would not help the situation.
When I removed all the old medium I did see some nice new root activity so perhaps this will
be another case of 'close call'. fingers crossed!
Elaine, I moved most of my plants back in the greenhouse taking that moment to look over
each one, and I'm still not seeing any new root activity on that other plant. I was tempted
to dig down into the pot, but restrained myself! The leaves and p. bulbs look good and stable
with no further black death spreading.

That's good to hear, way to go!

Was thinking after I sent that question that I would remove them if the yellow pb's were not firm, too.
