Hello all, My name is hector and I love to dab pollen, Its in my blood! I grew commercial flowers for twenty years including hybridizing Orchids, Moved to western NC thinking I would not do this anymore but within a few years I needed to find something to keep me occupied and someone introduced me to day-lilies and I was hooked! I like hybridizing for whites, toothy and big flowers. A couple of years ago I bought Ice Age Frills thinking that it would look like the hybridizers photo but the picture enclosed is what it has looked like in my garden, it is tall with lots and lots of huge flowers and still blooming, My question to you is, Do any of you grow it and what does it look like in your your garden? Thank You!

Welcome yugo! (Hector)

Don't know the daylily but see it is a Benz hybrid. He is known for good daylilies.

The AHS database photo looks enhanced from looking at the background.

And all daylilies look different in different growing conditions - soil, sun, amendments etc.

Is it the parent of your seedlings? What are you using for breeding?

Care to tell us a little more about you?

Great area, NC!

Paul Owens is also in western NC, I believe. He would be a good source.

Thank you Lilylady for the Owens tip, I am 62 years old, had a heart transplant ten years ago went back to work three weeks after like nothing ever happened with no complications up to now, I work for the county and come home every day for an hour lunch and to dab pollen, I have a half acre slap full of these things. As far as what I work with, Well I use a lot of the newer stuff, but like I mentioned before I love the whites and toothy ones, I also want to create some huge ones like the very ruffled sdlng pictured, I use King Solomon alot on it. Thank you!

Welcome! Hector, I'm a newbie here too, and having lots of fun with all the nice people on the forum. Smiling I love white daylilies, and I think your seedling no.6 is my favorite Thumbs up . I don't have Ice Age Frills, but I do have Voila Francois, which is brand new in our garden this year. All the photos I saw of it before I bought it were showing it as very white. However, here ours seem to be like yours, more of a cream color. Nevetheless, it is a beauty, and I have a photo of it. You might be interested in checking it out for your breeding program. Oh, yes, your pink seedling no. 3 is my favorite of the pinks, but all your seedlings look pretty impressive. Good luck with your DL program, and hope to see you as a "regular".

I just wish the white ones were really white. White irises can be pure white, so I expected to see pure white daylilies when I started to collect them a few years back. But alas, I now understand that in the daylily world cream is white.

VOILA FRANCOIS is just about my favorite white, although for me it's a very light apricot. And I love MICHAEL MILLER too. SNOW CRYSTAL is also a nice one, but in the garden its stamens seem to turn black and that bothers me a little bit. I have Fred's LILLIAN'S VAPOR TRAIL but it hasn't bloomed for me yet.

And I absolutely hate it when the hybridizers play with the colors on their daylily images. The one that comes to mind that I know we discussed before over in DG is the hybridizer's picture of WEDDING GOWN. But at least you can tell that that image has been modified (color was actually reduced to make it look pure white) by looking at the color of the foliage. And I've read complaints by people who later saw the actual blooms. But I also know that colors in photos can look very different between sunlight and shade in anyone's pictures, and that certainly isn't intentional. And pictures of whites taken later in the day will look whiter too, possibly because the very light color in the bloom fades away in the sunlight.

Hector, your white seedlings look very white and are really beautiful. Are any of them pure white? That would be really terrific if they are. And I love your pinks, especially that fifth one down. Really gorgeous! Some of our members who hybridize have their own threads of their seedlings, and we love it when they include the parentage of the seedlings.

Thank you for the title, I've been visiting this forum for a while now and it was ladylovingdove or Dot that told me what a nice bunch you all are and how easy it was to download photos, I'll never go back to photobucket again!
