I am getting 8-10 adenium seeds through our local plant exchange. They are coming in the mail within the next few days. I am new to adenium but thought I would try my hand at the free seeds. My thumb is green but turns black when it comes to seeds. We'll see what happens this time. I didn't even ask about the color of the mother plant! But I will later. The Babies to Adult thread was very helpful but I still have a few questions specific to my situation.
1) I am leaving out of town for 5 days starting Thursday (tomorrow). What should I have my husband do with the seeds when they come in the mail? Put them in the fridge?
2) I will plant on Monday according to some of the suggestions on the Babies to Adults thread (pg 6): soak in hot water for 2-3 hours, remove the shell if it is easy to do. cover with 1/8" mix of peat and perlite. 50/50 mix?
3) Will it go into full sun to germinate? I am home only for a few days. Maybe they will spout? And when I leave again for my next 5-day trip?? What should I do with them? Protect from rains? Full sun?

i was told to keep seeds fresh use zip lock with all air out put in your warmest part of fridge this is for long term storage. if you have A/C on just keep under 80 and in zip lock bag should be fine.

can you believe i just put 35 different kinds of adenium seeds to soak (5 of each) for the co-op i have already 250 seeds on there way looking at 200 more ....maybe


dont soak in hot water just room temp for up to 5 -6 hrs and you dont have to take the coat off at that time some find it easier. not in full sun to germinate it will dry top out to fast

I think bright light and warm but not hot the growers in India say not full sun until they have 5 full sets of leaves. yes need to protect from rain most like to use a spray bottle to keep moist i water from bottom

Thanks, Mike! I will put a tray of water beneath the seedlings while I am gone next week to help it stay moist.

not meaning to break in here,I've been rasing desert roses for over ten years,no hot water,no frig,they will be ok in a plastic bag for up to thirty day,out of bright sun light.As for soaking I don't . I plant them in my own soil mix that already damp.

Where have you been hiding we need you to help us poor inexperienced growers THANKS for your advice I have a few friends in India and Thailand that is mostly where i get advice from We do have several great people here but love to see and here more of your plants and tips PLEASE we LOVE pictures!!!

if you have been growing them for this long you have to sell them yes? where do you sell them?? i do a lot of buying and selling of plants and ALWAYS looking for more growers for my network so when people say HEY mike can you fine me....or get me....or do a co-op for.....i have some where to go.

I just placed 3 large orders for seeds I think (bad right not sure how many) adenium seeds 600+ for my co-op on plants and seeds would you have anything you would like to sell or trade. I will list it for you on my co-op and unlike other co-op runners i would not ask you fro ANY of your money what you charge is what you get. As now we are in need of other adeniums other then obesum's at a good cost we are kind of cheap around here LOL

Thanks for the welcome Mike.As for seeds were I get mine from I have about 85% sucess rate.Yes I will sell plants.I have mixed Colors of Seedlings.I will send you some pictures maybe tomorrow,Were most people including myself is over water the poor things.

Hi, Clarence! Nice to see your plamts and to have you speak up.

I started that Babies to Adult thread, and it got all loaded up and off track with comments, and I didn't finish it, bad me! Hmm, I'll have to go see where I stopped...

I treated my last batch of seeds/seedlings like petunias, and the first few started blooming in four months! Nothing exciting, just pinks for the Botanical Gardens where I volunteer two days a week. I believe planting in May helped, with the springtime feel of that time of year.

And, five days isn't too long to go without watering, not at all.

My adenium seeds (thanks Rucky!) are in. You all could have warned me that harvesting the seed from within the covering/sheath was not unlike pinching a zit! I only broke out half the seeds. They are planted in some rich volcanic sand acquired from my recent travels, perlite and cactus soil. On top is only 1/8" thick. I have them in the shade and will be watering them from the bottom. Do I need to cover them in plastic? Houston temps at night will drop to 60"s. But the day will be upper 80's-low 90's. I will be leaving town again soon. I hope to have some sprouts when I return!

I always covered mine, I don't know if anyone else has had my problem but I found that nats will eat the seeds, I planted some seeds one time and they never came up I turned the dish over did not find anything but nats, no seeds.

60's is cold for sprouting seeds. And the surface should be kept moist, so the sprouts can break through. For the bugs, gnats, I sprayed a little bug killer, Malathion, on the surface of the soil mix. That kept the nasties away.

If you don't have luck with this bunch, I'll send you some more seeds.

Thanks, Coconut. I am leaving today for 5 days. Should I move the seeds indoors while I'm gone??

I'm late as usual but everything has been well covered and are all good tips.I soak mine for at least 4 hours in room temp water.Do not soak for more than 8 or they will turn to mush.I also sprout mine in the shade and gradually move to sun.

Doris I read every day even though I havn't posted much lately.Ann fell about three weeks ago and broke her arm near the shoulder.That gives me double duty with some help from the daughters.I have also started selling at the local farmers market and am also putting together the new website.The website should go public in early October.Busy,busy,busy and loving it....well except for the broken arm.

The market looks so sweet and low pressure. We have vendors only at events that are crowded with hundreds and hundreds of people. I just never feel like buying anything in the crush. I'd love to see a photo of just your table of plants.

The market is low key.it"s four blocks long,on main street,in the center of town.There is a steady flow of customers but no big press.I am enjoying it.A big plus is that it smells wonderful from all the baked goods and
flowers.It is much nicer than the flea market I had been using.I will try to remember to take a picture this Saturday.
The website will be information only....no sales.

5 Days later. I have 1 sprout out of 30 here. The nights have been cooler but still 90 in the day. So maybe the others will pop up this week?

Push! Maybe they are a bit deep. Be sure to keep the surface damp, most folks have some sort of sprayer for that. I use a windex bottle.

Seeds take as long as two weeks to sprout, but usually quicker. More should be popping up as I post!

The one that has sprouted I took the covering off if that makes a difference. There is only 1/8" soil on it and they are very moist. I am waiting patiently. Well, sort of patiently. LOL
