I have a wonderful orchard near me. They have all kinds of great apples.

I have frozen sauce, and made apple pie jam. I don't own a dehydrator.

What other way can a person preserve apples for eating the rest of the year?

Sun Crisp, Melrose and Jonagold - I just bought a peck of each. And I am on the list to get Pink Lady when it is ready.

We've put up Pristine, Pinova, Zestar, Honey Crisp and Rubinette so far as applesauce. We label it with the variety of apple and enjoy the variety of flavors as we use it all year. I have been getting half pecks or peck of each variety, so I don't have a lot of each one. I think we average about 6 of the 1-2 cup ziplock bags of each.

I made three batches of jam.... Rubinette, Honey Crisp and Pinova.

We have been eating them fresh (so,so good with a small smear of peanut butter), Waldorf Salad, "stewed" - my elderly Mom's way of cooking them, made a couple pies, one apple cake and also some baked apples.

Would love more ideas..... Thumbs up

I have no ideas. The only way I bake apples is in the oven. Baked apples are a great fall and winter desert. But I have no idea how to preserve them.

Trish processes pears by peeling, coring and then slicing them and jarring them up in quart size jars. They have kept their color really well, and I believe that apples could be done the same way. I think she just followed the directions in the Ball book.

You can cut them up and can them in a light syrup. Works nice in the winter for apple crisp, pies, or just to dump on a stack of pancakes. Have your tried apple butter? It's great. I make it in the crock pot. I like to mix a lot of differant types of apples when I make it. Also do that with apple sauce. You can pickle them too, make spiced apples. You can get the recipes from an internet search.

I did make crock pot apple butter last year. Made enough that I still have a lot!

Thanks for the suggestions!

I will check for recipes with them in syrup. I have done that with peaches. I froze them, and they turned out good!

I grew up in the north and we would wrap apples in newspaper and store in the fruit cellar. We would enjoy fresh apples well into winter in this manner. Perhaps you are also in a cool enough climate for storing fresh apples

I also grew up loving pickled apple rings and have the recipe if you would be interested.

Are the canned? I don't have a canner or know anything about doing that.

I've never eaten spiced apple rings. Sounds interesting!

Not canned in a pressure cooker but preserved in a water bath canner in jars with canning lids. It is quite easy to do.

All this talk of apples makes me hungry (and jealous). Apples don't grow well here.

Canning is pretty easy, if I can do it, you can too! I forgot about sauted apples. I melt butter in a saute' pan and put in the sliced apples. When they start to get soft and a bit brown in spots, add sugar to taste, and let the sugar carmalize. I put this on pancakes, especially good on a puff pancake, and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Also you can thicken it with a bit of corn starch and use it as topping on a coffee cake. Also there's apple upside down cake. You can find these recipes on line.

Oh! I was thinking you meant the apples that are in jars. I think they are rather small apples. They are soaked in something that makes them really ruby red.

My Ex mother-in-law taught me how to make "Fried Apples." She used tart, firm apples, like Granny Smith. She fried 2-3 nice slices of bacon, till crispy. Remove the bacon, add peeled, sliced apples. Maybe 2-3 large apples. She adds a couple tablespoons of brown sugar, a bit of maple syrup. Slowly fry till apples are cooked and glazed. Add the bacon back in to warm. I have also seen her add fresh pepper to it. Seemed she did that when serving them as a side with roast pork. once, when she was at my house, she added some of my peach jam to it. Eloise was not a "recipe" cook. Some of this, handful of that, cook till done or looks right.

My Mom has a family recipe for an Apple Cake. Problem is, it is a moist cake. With just two of us, it gets all soggy before we eat it all, and it does not freeze well.

Tom, I have problems lifting heavy pans on or off the stove. My Mom lives with me now, but she is 88 and not very strong anymore either. If it were not for that, I would try canning. I keep jam in the freezer so I don't need to process it. I can manage things like cooking some apples down to sauce, then put in ziplocks and freeze. But, I would not want to try dealing with a canner. I know it is a lot of work, but to me, cooking or putting food up in the freezer is also fun, and almost meditative.

Anyway, that is why I was hoping to get ideas on freezing the apples as sauce. Thumbs up

We made sauce out of the Melrose apples yesterday. It was good, but the texture was kind of grainy, even after I put it through the food mill. More like store bought is. I am used to home made apple sauce being fine texture and smooth.

Apples with peanut butter are great.

I also combine apple slices with a little cheese: cheddar or Monterey Jack with hot peppers "Pepper Jack" cheese.

Gala and Fuji are my favorites. We have a fruit stand where prices rnage from 69 cents per pound to $1.26. Supermarket apples start abov e the top of that rn age even in season!

I have 5 apple trees, Granny Smith, Wolf River, Yellow Transparant, Cortland, and Bonnie Best. I had 2 apples on the Corland tree this year, and that's all there was. Kind of discouraging. Usually this time of year, I'm picking apples and canning them like mad, but not this year. This is my usual harvest from my Granny Smith, and a Pic of my Contender peach tree last year. This year every thing bloomed in March, and froze in April.

I know this is a very old thread but it's a goody. I'm really liking the recipes! I've never thought of making apple butter in a crock pot. What else can be done with apples?

Yep, it was a good thread. I just reread from the top. Thanks for reviving it even though it isn't quite apple season. I get hungry just rereading this... Whistling
