First of all, I completely agree with Arlene - no need for daily watering. Your clematises are from large flowered group. From my experience they almost all getting crispy leaves in the summer. I have mature Nelly Moser in full sun. The roots are between azalea bushes. Classic position! I am in Seattle. Good, not so hot summers... and crispy leaves
. My viticellas doing much better in full sun. Also Texensis group likes sun from ground up. Montanas never loose any leaves. (I am not sure if they can grow in your area). Integrifolias like sun.
You can try to cut your clematises after spring flowering in half and fertilize. The leaves will be much better plus good second flush of flowers. If you going to move your plants try grow them through different bushes. I stated to grow mine through rhododendrons and hydrangeas and now I am very happy. I don't see the foliage just flowers popping here and there
