Elizabete, I don't have any additional information on Eureka. I hate to see it go and can only hope it will return one day. I do understand why it may not be cost effective at the present time. It was a good resource. I have the last 6 issues near my computer. At least I can refer to it if I am looking for a certain daylily or need an approximate price on a daylily though this is everchanging. I feel for those daylily lovers who do not have internet and thus no access to daylily growers online. We listed our garden in the 2012 Eureka for the first time, and many of our contacts came from the Eureka. We will be working on a website over the winter.

Maryl, the e-mail address I have for Bob Selman is [email protected]. The mailing address is Robert Selman, 872 Lower Flat Creek Road Alexander NC 28701. I bought my order on the Lily Auction Daylily Store through Instant Buy which I like very much, no bidding. Check this out, you may find DLs you like, though I can't say if they will be new enough for you, you just have to look--good luck.

Thanks, Doris, and good luck with your website! : )

Avedon, thanks to you, too! I didn't realize that Blueridge also was selling via the LA's Daylily Store. That may explain why relatively few daylilies are now listed in their AOL store.

All the best - Elizabete

Chicken On The Run

Coleman Hawkins

Gail Braunstein

Gods Gift to Warthogs

Hell Hath No Fury

Mascara Snake

Monkey Hips

Muscle and Blood

Nate

Rachel Frye
The Tingler

Zoot Sims

One more Bachman dl I used to grow, but don't anymore. It rapidly increased in fans in one year that I happily gave it all back to Dan is....

Shoutin' the Blues

Would love to get more Bachman dls next year.

Check back with Dan in 2013 to see if he has any available fans of the ones you wanted. He and his wife, Jackie, have an annual open house of dls every year. It's usually the first week of July, but if you're on his mailing list, he always sends a postcard out and lets people know what the dates are. Usually it's for a week. Don't know if you're interested or not. His printed color catalog of his intros is free, you just have to be on his mailing list. He specializes in spidery/uf dls.

When my daughter lived in Dayton, OH several yrs ago I was just getting into dls and it seemed we visited either before or after bloom time. I had looked his place up on mapquest. Do you go each yr?

I knew they had a big event during bloom season. You have quite a collection of his going on! I really like Mascara Snake. One that I had thought about was Charon the Ferryman. I grew up by Green River Ferry. I know this one is named for the underworld tho lol.

I may have to see if I can stop there on one of my Ohio trips. I have twice set up a list, and never ordered any, because my lists were so large I couldn't afford them, and couldn't figure out which ones to remove so I COULD afford them! Whistling

On the other hand, maybe I SHOULDN'T stop there...... Big Grin

I do have God's Gift To Warthogs, acquired it a year ago so I am hoping for bigger and better things this coming year.

Some very nice pictures of the Bachman daylilies. I like some of his colors....Avedon: Thanks for the further info on Bob Selman. You and I and several others are after the same thing - rust free gardens. BTW I see Selman offers one of my favorite daylilies "Sour Puss" by Shooter. Surrounded by rusters this year, it escaped infection and stayed clean even after I moved it to a less exposed area. Bloomed long and profusely...This is going to expose my ignorance, but I don't go on the Daylily Auction much so was unaware they have a "store" that you can just buy direct from. Is that right? No bidding? The price posted next to the selection is the price you pay even though the format still has the word "bid" alongside it? And it's under the header of "Daylily Store"?.......Maryl

Maryl, go to the LA web page and look on the left side almost to the end. You will see Daylily Store listed, and it is even broken into categories, something I really like. For instance, if you are only interested in large Dls. you can do that, or maybe you want just the doubles, or whatever if you want a specific flower type. I checked out the large flowers first, but then I specified the seller, Bob Selman, and only looked at his flowers. You will notice on the right side of the page when you click on whichever one you are interested in, there is a pink box on the right side of the page. This is for the Instant Buy and the number of plants available will be shown with the price. One you fill in that box and click Buy Now, you are practically done. You will be given a chance to rethink your buy or you confirm it. Once confirmed, the plant is yours. There is no bidding with this system, and I love it. Also, when the number of plants available are all sold, that plant will be removed. I bought Stardust Heiress and I was the last buyer, so when my buy was confirmed, that plant was removed from the list. The thing to do is look at all the offerings of the northern sellers, if you know who they are and trust them, and hopefully you will get some good plants. I have also done instant buys with Earthstar 3000, Ed Hartsell. I checked him out and he has a good reputation, and he lives in Kentucky. He says he has no rust, so i will have to take this on faith, but I'll find out this spring when I receive plants from him. I got Snowflake Empress, Margo Reed Indeed, and Inky Fingers. Now these are not brand new on the market plants, but there are some on there that might work for you. Good luck, like to know if you decided to try this.

Teresa,

Because of my MS, I'm not able to go every year, but I'd like to.

I use to live in the greater Dayton, OH area for years, then I lived a year in Lebanon, OH and then some years in the greater Cincinnati, OH before moving to northern KY in 1996. Where in the Dayton area did your daughter? Of all the places I lived in the Dayton area, I loved living in Centerville the best! Green Grin! Lovey dubby Thumbs up

Dan names his dls from movies, jazz and a restaurant he used to own with his brother, for three examples. Can't remember what else inspires him at the moment.

Thanks again Avedon. I learn something every day. I don't know how much my pocketbook will thank me later on, but I'll be looking through the store over winter. I'll certainly be taking a peek at Earthstar. BTW, I did notice on Bob Selman (Blueridge) that he states that he sprays for rust. However, as one zone 7 grower told me this spring, in order to have the newer hybrids to sell later on, she has to take a chance on rust when she orders from Southern Growers. She let's her winters take care of any new rusters and keeps the new imports separate from her older daylilies (which she sells). Unfortunately, as you know, we didn't have our normal cold winter last year, so things were more iffy then usual from zone 7 growers. Also, if you like some of the Stamile's, Diane's Daylilies in Utah sells them. I've ordered from her before, and although her plants aren't the big Leeks that come from the south, they all grow nicely.....Maryl http://www.dianedaylilies.com/...

Getting back to strange names for daylilies, this morning I read an article about the Hostess company going out of business. Most of us know them as the makers of Twinkies. According to this article, during World War 2, a foot-pedaled machine was used to pump the filling into the Twinkies. Too much pressure resulted in the Twinkies blowing up. I think "Exploding Twinkies" ought to be used by some grower--how about it, ladies and gentlemen hybridizers? A really unique name that will be very hard to forget.

I've found a couple of more northern nurseries since I posted this thread that offer some of the newer southern daylilies. One is Cottage Garden in New York. For starters they carry Parrots of the Caribbean which I was looking for in particular. http://www.daylily.net/gardens.... I e-mailed Brett and asked him his rust situation. His reply was that he is a zone 6 garden (which kills the rust over winter) and keeps any new plants he takes in separate from the general population, which are all field grown. His price on Pirates was very competitive.........The other more northern daylily nursery is in Kentucky: Bluegrass Nursery. In their introduction they say they are a rust free nursery. http://bluegrassdaylilygardens...

I've had no experience with either of them, but at least I have a source for some of the ones on my list.....Maryl
