Well, that is a great job of stacking them, Valerie! I dug into Persian Market this year, so consequently it didn't do a thing. If the variegated Kwanso is happy there, I wouldn't move it either.

Just discovered this thread and am thoroughly enjoying everyone's photos. I love the "oldies" and didn't realize I have as many as are in my garden. I'm using 1980 as my cut-off year. In no particular order, my older daylilies are:
Baby Darling, Maxwell, 1971

And I just counted another 23 in my spreadsheet that are pre-1980, not all of which I am certain are still surviving. Will not list all of those until I check to be sure they're still with me. Many were new to my garden either last Fall or this Spring and have not yet bloomed.

How old is old? I have a lot of 1990s and early 2000s because I put the gardens in on a budget and was mostly looking for color rather than fancy. Pre-1990 I have:

Cherry Cheeks (Peck 1968)
Cedar Waxwing (probably; Griesbach-Klehm, 1979)
Double River Wye (probably; Kropf, 1982)
Gay Cravat (Peck 1976)
Golliwog (Wild 1983)
Haidee (or a similar Wild; 1968)
Jade Star (Moldovan 1978)
July Gold (Wild 1971)
Kindly Light (Bechtold 1950)
La Belle Dame (Yancey 1975)
Lady Neva (Alexander-Moody 1970)
Lake Norman Sunset (Carpenter-K, 1979)
Lemon Lyric (Harris-Benz 1985)
Mynelle's Starfish (Hayward-M, 1982)
Open Hearth (Lambert, 1976)
Pakistan (Wild, 1983)
Rocket City (Hardy, 1967)
Russian Rhapsody (Munson-RW, 1973)
When I Dream (Yancey, 1979)

Here is Golliwog:

Jey, you have a nice list of oldies!

Per AHS definition: "Historical daylilies are defined as all daylily species and daylily cultivars registered 30 years prior to the current year". https://daylilies.org/daylily-...

However, the original question was "what are the oldest daylilies you grow?", so in your own garden, you can set the year however far you want to go back. I chose 1969 because I wanted to limit my oldest daylilies to over 50 years.

It's interesting to see which ones keep coming up in folks' lists. As I read them, I keep saying to myself, "I grow that one...and that one...and that one..."

Nan, I noticed the same thing. Quite a few of us have Ice Carnival, Cherry Lace, Hyperion, Novelty Number.

I think my "oldies" are more reliable than the newer cultivars, though have no real basis for thinking that. Some of these newer daylilies seem trickier to grow and I've wondered if the extensive hybridization has made them so. Until recent years I'd never heard discussions regarding in what area of the country a daylily would grow best; they seemed to be able to grow about anywhere. I bought daylilies from a local grower when I lived in Angier as well as some of the garden centers and never gave whether they would survive in my area a thought. They all did very well and never had rust. And that was in Zone 7b/8a - hot and humid.

It's partly why I'm so puzzled with the losses I've had here, just discovered this morning that White Eyes Pink Dragon is gone. I have decided to not try to replace the ones that don't survive. If they really don't like it here then I don't want to torture them. Whistling Hilarious!

2Dogsmother, did you folks have late winter through early summer drought?

We did, and I suspect I didn't start watering early enouogh to make everybody happy. Most of my plants, oldies or not, have only been here since late spring / early summer 2021, and a couple got moved again last fall.

Oldies Mynelle's Starfish, Open Hearth, and When I Dream were noticeably less happy this year than last year. Other oldies such as Jade Star and much-abused* probably Cedar Waxwing have bloomed a bunch.

*Much-abused: For years it languished in heavy shade, putting out only 3-4 blooms. Last fall I dug it out in small shallow broken pieces because of the tree roots. Planted the small pieces in sunny dry crappy soil and hoped for the best. Those little pieces went nuts this year, might still be a couple blooms to go.

Jey, I can't recall exactly how much rain we had in late Winter through early Summer. Seems to me we had a fairly wet Spring. I should start keeping track on my calendar as the only other way I'd be certain is to go back through the Weather threads here. We did have periods of dry spells, followed by very wet, and I think it was much colder through May than usual. I say that because I wasn't able to plant vegetables until after Memorial Day and I can usually "fudge" it a bit and get them in mid-May. June was warmer and July has been hot and humid. Last December was fairly mild with the exception of some "shocks" to the gardens when we dipped way below zero several nights during the month. I think it was also pretty dry through last Fall, and I think everything has combined to wreak havoc on the daylilies. Working in the biggest garden today I could see new growth emerging on plants I thought were goners so maybe they will recover yet.

If we use the AHS definition, then we are using 1993 as the cut off. Although that doesn't seem all that historic to me but whatever, as good a guideline as any.
