Lyle is Rosie Meyer blooming for you as long as it is touted to. Also wondering if that trait is being passed on to the kids or at least making them bloom longer than they might otherwise.

I love the last seedling in the 1st. group. Color and form are great.
Also that last one of the Rolling Raven cross is so so nice.

Steph - Rosie Meyer is one of the best daylilies I grow, and from what I am seeing from the offspring’s it may be worth-while to convert RM ...just a thought

I have never had any incident of crown root from Rosie Meyer I can't keep rust long enough to know how rust resistant this one is, the daylily is now in a 5 gallon pot with about 14 fans and growing well ...do that with a newer daylily and chances are you will have crown rot ..Or a very stress plant..

Our club has its plant sale in the fall (due to hi temps in the early summer) and it was while digging sale plants at a club members house in Central Phoenix I first discovered Rosie Meyer - It was mid-October "nothing else was bloom except RM I ask the club member how long of a bloom season does this daylily have? She replied, almost all year ...I said "I want it" she said dig it! I will never get rid of this little red daylily. Some daylilies earn their way in the daylily world, and others buy their way in....

Sometimes hybridizers need a reality check!

Stella D'oro

Characteristics of Stella de Oro Daylily:

Stella de Oro daylily is valued as a compact plant and early bloomer, reaching a height of just 12" with a similar spread. It blooms from May-July. In fact, its ability to re-bloom over a long period, along with its adaptability to a wide range of planting zones and conditions, makes it perhaps the most popular of the daylilies. The fragrant flowers are golden and trumpet-shaped. The foliage is also attractive, forming a dense clump that can function as a groundcover
Stella de Oro daylily will bloom most profusely if grown in full sun, however it will tolerate light shade, thus giving landscapers flexibility. It is also drought-tolerant. Grow Stella de Oro daylily in a well-drained soil. Although not fussy, it will perform better in a soil with plenty of humus.

Uses for Stella de Oro Daylily:

Stella de Oro daylilies are often planted in lines to form borders but also look good massed together in a planting bed. Still others use them in container gardening. Their tolerance for shade and dry conditions make them a popular choice for areas of the landscape plagued by those two conditions. As a deer-resistant perennial, Stella de Oro daylily is also a potential solution for another plague: deer damage. As if all that weren't enough, Stella de Oro daylily makes for a good cut flower.

Lyle I must have a piece of Rosie Meyer. Something I want to try are some Surflan seed conversions and seed from her may be just the thing to do. I am just now trying to get all the info I can on the procedure so this next month I can tart a few Dip seeds I already have.

Lyle I was thinking of putting RM with a nice patterned hardy dip since it is an EV. I figured It would be a hardier cross for the cold that way. I would want a cple blooming size fans if you have them in the spring. If I treat some seed I would treat those for you if you like.

I really enjoy seeing daylilies in bloom this time of year - as I look outside my window and see snow covering my leaf mulched daylily beds. Thanks for posting them Lyle, you have gorgeous flowers. ~Jan

Steph - I will add a couple fans of RM to your other daylilies.

Thanks Jan, Our temps will drop to the 60[s by mid-week so anything blooming won't open very well.

Debra - I like the blooms with all the bells and whistles - but a nice clean bloom always stands out in the garden..

I hope this one will improve - This is a late arrival and may need more heat to show teeth.

Nice dec. blooms!

Lyle, this is our second warmer than usual winter and its taking everything I have not to feed my plants. What do you do this time of the year with yours. Im afraid they are making buds down there already, and need some help in making me pretty blooms.
I tried really really hard this year to think about what color the flower might be, not just plant crosses in which I like the flowers or plant habit. Im on my last nerve with brown and mungy flowers. Angry

Pam - We have just had the second warmest November on record. This time of year I am more concerned with insects than feeding the daylilies, I feel they need a rest especially if they have set pod in the spring, without a hard freeze insects can multiply like crazy. I usually start my feed program mid to late February, depending on the daytime temps..

I did have to get after the aphids yesterday. Pouring here and OH SO needed. Guess Ill have to get after them again tomorrow. Next time we need rain like this, I guess I just need to spray. Anything that works. Even tho Ive been watering, they still seem to know the 'real' thing. Just cant beat mother nature. Even my hardscape stuff was wilted.

Pam - I found this artical on thrips - if you are having trouble with the color of your blooms it may be thrips..

Controlling Daylily Thrips
Thrips are the bane of evey daylily grower, hybridizers and collectors alike. The tiny insect can destroy a flower crop and at the very least willl make your daylily blooms twisted, distorted, muddy and off color. We have even found insects which appeared to be thrips inside of distorted daylily seed pods. If you find buds turning brown and dropping off thrips are the likely culprit. Before you start wildly spraying put up a few thrip traps. Take a small piece of cardboard or wood and paint one side yellow and one side blue. Attach to a stake, smear with petroleum jelly, insert the traps in your daylily garden and wait. Withn a few days you should have a few tiny dark (sometimes orange or yellow) insects trapped in the jelly.
If indeed you are infested with the dreaded thrip a very aggressive campaign is required to control them. We use systemic rose fertilizer which contains a thrip insecticide in early spring In warmer areas perhaps in late winter would be the time to treat. 30 days later we follow up with a soil drench of Merit insecticide. We do routine patrols with a sprayer of neem or spinosad if a daylily plant appears to be under attack. Sprays are not very effective because the insects burrow into buds and leaves where the sprays do not reach. This is in addition to the before mentioned systemic controls which will kill most of the insects wherever they hide.
Dry weather encourages the thrips and some daylilies are more attractive than others to the insect. 2012 has been a very bad year for them here and each year seems to get worse. An early and agressive campaign is required if the thrip finds its way to your garden.
