I picked up a book at the local Dollar General called A Thousand White Women, a factionalized Western. Pretty interesting, covers women in the 1870s in the Wild West.

This , Lynda?
If so, looks like a great dollar store find.

I'm well into The Night Lives On, by Walter Lord, about the Titanic.
Fascinating reading, author really organizes the information well. Goes into details about ship construction, safety standards (lack of!) in the time, talks about life on board ship, about actions of various crew during the sinking, somehow a very good picture of the sailing and the event without ever overwhelmingly technical info. Often raising questions "but why didn't they...?" and then gives context that explains why so many things that seem like terrible lapses in judgement were not recognized/ acknowledged as such.
Plant it and they will come.

I think I would like that. There's a program on History now called Histories greatest mysteries and they did a show about the sinking of the Titanic. I found out info At never knew before. The program is narrated by Lawrence Fishburn.

I think it's really well written, lacks sensationalism at least so far.

Husband finished The Boys in the Boat and found it fascinating. Came out a few years ago?

Finished the first book on my 2021 reading list today. 'Brilliant Green - The Surprising History and Science of Plant Intelligence'.

This was an interesting read. The author provided several resources at the end for further reading, which I'll definitely have to look into. The book covers a variety of subjects relating to senses in plants, and argues that plants should be described as intelligent beings. It covers all of the senses we typically think of as strictly human or animal, and describes how each occurs within a plant. It also covers additional senses that plants have, and animals don't.

It touched on some very interesting subjects that got the scientist in me thinking. For example: how root tips act as a sort of command center for the plant, and swarm behavior in the entire root network. The emergence of protocarnivory in plants I certainly wouldn't have expected. Chemical communications between plants. Interesting reproductive tactics in some species.

Lots of neat stuff. I definitely recommend it if you're interested in botany, plant functions, and have an interest in plant intelligence. Thumbs up

Picked up an odd old book - 1957 - called 'Twelve Girls in the Garden', by Shane martin, of whom I'd never heard. It's a low-key mystery, nicely constructed, with a likeable protagonist.
In the greenhouse, I'm rereading 'Flying Dutch' by Tom Holt. It's still funny, but the humour feels a little bit laboured. I may have grown more finicky since we went professional. Still a good story, though, with several interesting p'sov.

You know it is a good one when at 700 pages you just wanted it to keep on going. I thought a pretty original story. And Eve Black was one of the most interesting characters King has come up with.

They have it on Amazon Lynda. I've gotten a few used books that were in great shape.

I have also gotten a few books from here https://www.biblio.com/search....

Thanks, Ronnie! I found a very obscure gardening book on Amazon not too long ago.... sold as used, but it was in pristine condition.

First Principles by Thomas E Ricks, so far this has been an excellent read for history lovers Its about understanding the founders based on their education and and their Classical Roman and Greek readings.

Great book. Met Jim Fergus, the author, at a writer's event. He's written several novels and some nonfiction.

I think I would like to read more of his books. The one I have had a teaser of the next one that sort of continues this particular story.
