I finished A Woman's War by S. Block. It's a continuation of the Home Fires TV series. One more book to go in the series.

1000 white Women is described as 'alternate-history. I would love to read more 'real history' from women in the westward expansion.

I finished The Night Lives On, about the Titanic, by Walter Lord, discusses aspects of the disaster and investigations that followed.

and now in Miracle of Dunkirk, same author, because Night was so well written. somewhat detailed description of the week or so before the evacuation, and the evacuation, a little hard to follow as the action in northern France that week was a fast changing big mess that powers that were had a very hard time keeping track of.

Sally, I don't know if there are many real stories about Women and their lives during that period. I think I'll try to find some.

The Home Fires series is about a group of women in England during WW2. Starts as a TV series, ends in a book series.

The Alice Network is good, too.

I have one book left to read in the Home Fires series. It's on hold @ my library, should be soon. I'm next. I don't know if it will end the story, or leave it open again for another sequel.

I still haven't read A Woman's Courage, the last one. I'm next in line for the ebook at my library. I'm really curious to see if the author wraps up the saga or leaves it open to a sequel.

I don't buy many books. We have a good library and I am patient enough to wait a while. Smiling

I was recently in our library, which is surprising large for our small city. I really need to check out the books. In Little Rock, where I grew up, we had a huge library and I never bought books. I got in the habit of buying books here because there are so many places around here to get really inexpensive books. That's why I have so many. The biggest reason I need to use the library more is to read the latest books coming out. I never find these for sale at the used bookshops or places like Goodwill. Still, a good place to look for classics. And nearly every Patricia Cornwell novel I have came from used bookstores.

We have a great library here. We gave up buying books about 10 years ago. My husband reads twice and much as I, and it was getting expensive, even with used books. Then we had all those books to get rid of... Now, I read Kindle books from the library almost exclusively. I have a Kindle paperwhite and I find it much easier on the eyes than print books. I can control the lighting and font size, boldness. The old eyes aren't what they used to be. And I can download content at any hour of the day or night.

My only complaint about our library is they spend so much money and resources on things like stupid videos and video games and music. Kids occupy the computers playing games. I'd like to see the focus go back to literature.

There's a used book store near me. Seem to have a brisk trade in paperbacks, but also was great for kid's books, classics, just fun to poke around in. I have really old Nancy Drews- but the shop owner said no thanks, haha, plenty of them out there. (If you want fast action, try Nancy Drew- so much happens to her hahaha!)

My library is loaded with books, everything ordered before shutdown kept coming, not enough checking out. Waitlists on new things not as long as they used to be. And loads of ebooks. We have added a cart of new fiction by curbside pickup, it has been successful in getting a few things checked out- seeing the actual book is more enticing than scrolling through pages of online catalog. (Hope I am not boring about the library)

A Starless Sea (Erin Morgenstern, sci fi) was recommended to me, also was on a high school reading list.
Plant it and they will come.

I haven't been in the physical library since the pandemic began. (or anywhere else....). But really, I've been using mostly ebooks for years.

A few years ago, my friend (who has a beautiful, spotlessly clean home), got bedbugs in her house. A LOT of them before discovered and treated for $$$$$$$$. When I researched, I found that they can be spread by library books or used books. That might have also pushed me toward Kindle books. Hilarious!

Sally, have you ever found bedbugs in library books at your library?

Karen, I crossed with you. Thank you for being dedicated to the library! Of course, I rarely buy books anymore, almost everything can be had to borrow if you want. I even got rid of some 'saved' favorite kids books recently, as they were titles that are still reprinted. I also like the ereader for access and reading ease.

Yeah- we added popular video several years ago, and we all cringed in horror. It brought a lot of traffic, and also some revenue in fines. Have to admit they are very well used. We don't lend games but some do, I think. That is really ridiculous to me.

haha and again..
I think maybe once.. in our county.. not sure.. certainly not common.

Someone saw a cockroach once in book drop. so disgusting. Kind of glad for quarantine now so books are regarded as 'infected.' They are on a cart for 2 days before we handle again. Because when you collect them off shelves, you often carry a stack against your body.

My branch moved about 40,000 items a month, so certainly for the volume of books being moved, a bug is extremely, extremely rare.

That's good to know. Hilarious!

And I have to say, we have used the library for some videos. That's how we watched most of Downton Abby--- CDs from the library. But our library now carries a lot of crap videos and video games and music videos...

We use our library a lot. And now that we are (or feel we should be) house bound, we're using ebooks almost exclusively. My husband has used the curbside pickup a few times. He is a fast reader and he goes through twice as many books as I do.

I also return my ebooks immediately when I finish them, unless my husband wants to read it. I always hope the people ahead of me on holds will do the same. Smiling

If you turn off the wifi, and forget about it, the book could stay on there forever. I have two old kindle fires sitting in a drawer... no longer use... they could probably keep library books forever if I don't turn on the wifi. Don't you ever find that happens?

I never tried it.. hmm.. Thinking
But if you never turn wifi back on, you can never get a new book either, can you?
I tried to read ebooks on my phone during a cruise and lost access when out of port.
