Karen

Why would science fiction creep you out? Star Trek is cleaner and way less creepy than the average 'reality' show. Spider Robinson is a pussycat. Anne McCaffrey takes you to an enchanted world. Isaac Asimov's Azazel stories might make you laugh out loud. Forget the recent techno-horror stuff; go to the classics.

Ursula LeGuin rocks! I've been a huge fan of classic SciFi since high school. You really can't put it in the same category as modern horror/apocalyptic/creep out literature.
Yes, sometimes it can creep you out, but many more times clearly reveals the the existential questions that many modern physicists and astronomers have posed; are we alone in this universe? Is there other life out there? Is there really a Supreme being? How did the Universe really begin?
And sometimes reading SciFi is just pure entertainment on a basic level. Thrills but not chills.

I just finished reading A Warrior of the People by Joe Starita. It was about Susan LaFlesche, she was the first Native American doctor. It told of the struggles she went through and what life was like on a reservation and the problems that the Indians faced. Was very good.

Am now reading. I Got A Monster, the Rise and Fall of America's Most Corrupt Police Squad by Baynard Woods & Brandon Soderberg.

I guess I still had the Stand on my brain when I said creeped out. When my son was a kid he was obsessed with Star Trek. He watched all the TV shows, saw all the movies, read all the books. I always thought it was kind of weird. Not my thing. Doesn't hold my interest.

For entertainment, mystery is my top choice.
Having stared with Dorothy Sayers, I tend to favour the more literary end of the genre, but I've also enjoyed the light-hearted, the culinary and the feline series. Since the settings are generally some aspect of the world the author knows well, I learn about all kinds of unexpected things - antique garments, church organs, quilting, stamps, country music.... and places - especially small towns, where so much quiet mayhem seems to be taking place under a placid surface - and lifestyles very different from my own.

I loved all the Leaphorn and Chee stories by Tony Hillerman - some of those were turned into quite good movies, starring two fine Native actors: dishy Adam Beach and serious Wes Studi.
And now that I've been reminded of Native artists, one of my long-time top favourite writers is Thomas King https://www.goodreads.com/auth...

Rosie, how many of the Dune series have you read? I have all of them, even the posthumous book that was written using the authors discovered notes and an unfinished manuscript. My books are so tattered I need to replace some of them. I'm eagerly awaiting the new movie.

Lynda

The first movie..RUINED other new readers from reading Dune.

I have read all the books ...I have about 3 copies of each plus electronic ..but am missing some as i loan ..never get back..

Conservatively, I read the complete series 5-6 times ..I will not admit to more
But love the first two best

The last one was BS.. i do NOT believe Herbert had anything to do with it.. that was his money grabbing son.. shame on him!

Herbert was a GENIUS... the politics.. the environmental aspects.. the human foibles.. the love story... the desert culture and tribalism... everything is an education that pertains to every day and every age .. .. I am only sorry I read it and each successive time is just a reread..
Can you tell I am a fan?

Have you the Ice People? Waiting waiting for the electronic

, I'm interested in Ice People. I thought his son was taking advantage of his fathers name. I can see why the movie put people off reading the book(s). I think the plot is just too rich and complex to be able to cover it adequately in a 3 hour movie.
Yes, Herbert was a genius.... setting forth many correct observations about our governments, our social systems, our chosen moralities, how they operate, the many issues faced by the mistakes of maintaining unstable and unequal use of power, all wrapped up in a smashing and entertaining sci Fi story. I'm a huge fan. I've not ever even had this kind of conversation such as this because even among the few people I know who have read at the first books think I'm nuts to even talk about things like this. In our world oil is a resource that is used by the powerful to force their laws on the less powerful, and used as a means of control to subjugate the masses. Now if it's not happening overtly now, it may soon will be. On Dune , the resource used is water. Of course, now that we may be moving away from oil as an nerdy source , this might change to water for us as well.

Well, $334 IS a little too rich for my budget.... so far I have resisted electronic books.... this may be the year to explore and read the online books available.

I finished A Woman's Courage by S. Block. This is the last one of the Home Fires series, which started as the TV series, and when it was cancelled after 2 seasons, the author continued in books. I really liked them a lot. Recommended.
