Thanks, the wiki says it's considered an endangered parrot, we saw 30-40 of them in a flock near us.

Red-fronted Amazon Parrot. Yes, endangered in Mexico. Unfortunately there are 2 subspecies and there's no way to tell which one they are so they can't be caught and returned. There's a tiny population in Texas, too.

They are doing well in your part of CA. They are "feral" - as in non native.

The world is changing.

Article on Tech Crunch site about development of a bird feeder/video that IDs birds. I can find and open the article but can't seem to copy link successfully.

Right. For some reason it won't open from a link. Google Tech Crunch then search for article about Bird Buddy.

Oh wait, try this!

The first of its kind it's bound to be expensive. Give it five years, we will all be able to afford them.

Or until the price drop,it's similar to a motion trail cam. Doesn't alert ya at the time . Usually birds feed at certain times of the day and most of us expect them at certain time during the season. . I took all my feeders down last year. To many meany jays, then the squirrels , chipmunks. Yikes…

That is totally COOL, I wish I had thought about it, I bet people will pay that much, they pay that much for plants....just saying. Whistling

Bea, I don't put bird seed out anymore either, it was luring way too many critters to my garden. Black bears have knocked fences down here to get to the feeders, squirrels sent out a message to all the other squirrels and rats, it was the 25 doves in my trees every morning that made me throw in the towel.

Sherri, Ah yes and the greedy doves. The larger birds are just to big to hang on most feeders designed only for song birds. In most cases if the squirrels don't knock the seed out and down to the ground the larger birds do. It's was so funny to watch these huge fat squirrels jumps up several feet hang onto any part of the feeders then swing around till the seed has been dumped out or falls .
Like this jay not afraid of me at all, looking in thru the window at me … with the expression that could intimidate even me.
Oh the bears are here too. Very scary some of the videos online show bears breaking into houses, better to not leave out any seed, cat or dog food out. Over the hot summer many taking over pools to cool off.

Crabby stellar jay…staring thru the window.

I noticed just this morning that I have birds back at my feeder and suet hanger. The seed eaters must have run out of wild seeds to eat. This normally happens earlier in the year. I had both purple and house finches, plus some titmice.
I wanted Y'all to know that I plan to volunteer at a local wildlife rehabilitation center that specializes in birds of prey; owls, hawks and eagles. I've wanted to do this nearly my whole life. I've been shook up by deaths of friends lately and realized none of us know how much time we have left. This was on the top of my bucket list. I won't bore Y'all with the rest of the list! Hilarious!
Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.

I'm still waiting for the influx of birds I had to come back. Sighing! I was going through three suet cakes a week some weeks and now I'm cutting one in half and it lasts two weeks. Blinking

Put it out and they will come. Mine have just started active feeding. The climate is all screwed up, so the birds are all screwed up.

I've kept it up since before they starting coming less. It just requires me to cut the suet cake in half since so few show up. I'm sure they'll be back before I know it, but I sure miss seeing everyone.
