FWWC,

I am still learning, and I am learning a lot from all of you. I started buying DLs in 2010 and I made a few ignorance driven mistakes.

Are suggesting that I plant this one in the ground?

I have straw to place around the DL plants since so many recommend it.

How do you protect your newly planted DLs?
Do you also protect established plants?

Gerry

I was just sharing my experience with it - it may have been too cold in the pot for example. If you have space in the ground you could always plop it there.

I really don't do much to protect my plants, new or otherwise. They went through last winter with nothing more than the snow to insulate them. I do, however, try not to plant after the 15th. I am totally going to miss that deadline this year but not by too much. When I deal with the leaves in the fall I will spread them around the beds but it is never more than an inch thick and often much less than that.

My seedlings aren't planted yet either. I usually have them in the ground the first of August so I hope they survive.

I just received a plant through the mail on Wed (Sept 11) and decided to pot it rather than plant it. It's the last one I had coming this year and I thought I could bring it in on cold nights and take it out on warm days to hopefully give it a little more growing time. --First time I've tried this... so have to see how it works out! Susan, it is in the database.

I had bought some earlier, but it is certainly worthy of having more to share.

Lol!! Smiling

Susan, I got Modern Symmetry since I *need* patterns! --Quick question for those that have been watching Maryotts for the last couple of years... but if they've sold out of something this year is there a chance they'll have more available for spring shipment next year, or will they be sold out for awhile?

I've seen both. If they do have it available in the spring, better jump because odds are they don't have a ton of it.

We've seen him remove things from the bogo list and when supplies are replenished he will add the plant back, maybe not bogo.

Hi everyone,

How do you determine what gifts you feel comfortable asking for? Lets say you place a $100 dollar order, what price range should the gift suggestion be? I would be embarrassed to suggest something really expensive. I'm thinking about placing an order in spring, but I guess I just don't feel comfortable making suggestions. Some kind of guideline would be helpful.

Don't some of the nurseries mention that gift plants will be roughly 20% of the value of the total order? Somehow this sticks in my mind. And when I suggest gift plants I try to stick to daylilies hybridized by that nursery if possible, although I must admit I don't usually suggest gift certain plants unless they've indicated they would like suggestions.

You can just suggest certain colors you like or foliage. If you want you make up your wish list and watch the weekly specials. When you see a bonus you like then order a few to meet the minimum purchase. Maryott's will always send something nice and maybe even a new intro.

I don't know that I've ever specified particular plants. Instead, I tell them that I'm currently working on rounding out my selection of <insert characteristics here> and then I leave it up to them.

I usually suggest plants value no more than 50% of the order price. Sometimes I ask him to surprise me.

Bill is always very generous. He does want you to keep buying, but the gifts are just that-- gifts.

There have been orders where the gifts were the same value as the purchase.
