With our near freezing temperature last night, I brought in a handful of plants that were in bloom and/or bud. The blooming ones have been in bloom for 4 weeks or more. Cool weather has prolonged their blooming time. The downside is that those in sheath/bud have slowed down their blooming. The one on the far left is Lc. Prism Palette 'Mischief' AM/AOS, and it is (slowly) opening another flower. Two more stems are in sheath, so this one will be in bloom for at least another month or two. The Blc. Yen Corona 'Green Genius' has just about lost all her color and fragrance. She's been in bloom almost 2 mo. I have another 8-10 varieties in sheath, still out in the lanai with Christmas lights keeping them warm.

I do have that Den. tetragonum cross blooming now. That tag reads Den. tetragonum
Tet. 'Dark Red' x Tet. 'Red Red lip'.

That's what is known as a "sib cross"!
Two clones of tetragonum were crossed to hopefully produce a better clone.

When I get home I'll post the names on the label. I'm pretty sure Aussie Parade is one of the parents (I seem to remember that one). One of them has a clone name of 'Carrot Splash', so that's what SWMBO calls it. Hilarious!

I would love to complain about the the weather we have been having in Florida...but I'm afraid Ursula has us beat. My little inconvenient orchid shuffle is nothing compared to shoveling the sidewalk , stairs and driveway. Crying
And still the orchids are happily blooming along in the greenhouse, which has to be a place of refuge right now. You have so many gorgeous things and a few oddities as well...the Pleurothallis ornata is the oddest thing I have seen in a while!
Fred Clarke gave a lecture to the other Tampa Orchid Society on those crazy Aussie Dendrobiums , what neat flowers they have..SWMBO has nice taste.
Most of my buds are in suspended animation while they are stuck on the bakers rack in the dining room. My enclosed/ heated space is better than nothing..but not by much. It was 38 last night and the temp inside the 'greenhouse' was 51. Tonight is going down to 32. This one did open up yesterday.

Lindsey, it is pretty! How is the scent? Many people don't like the scent of percivaliana!

Yes, I spent a lot of time hanging out in the greenhouse, I love it! I was just a tiny bit concerned, how the glass ceiling would hold such an exceptionally heavy snow load, but no problem. I think the final amount was around 16/17 inches. Except the rain-gutter got bent again as the snow slid off in huge sheets, hitting the ground with a big clonk while striking the rain gutter on the way down. The ceiling was totally open today by lunch.
I freed my car this morning....

Yikes Lindsey, you are going to be colder than us. I bet Ursula's snow covered greenhouse is toasty, I am feeling pretty darn damp and chilly here. Is it me or does that pretty 'Florida WInter' have a frosty look to it?

I was trying not to take it out of the pot (kinda messy and hard to get back in 'just right' - SWMBO rules) and in a hurry at the time. Does it have a registered name yet? Or does she get to keep calling it Carrot Splash?

Ah...this is why I stay in "la-la land". I can see the snow covered mountains, but only see glistening dew on the roof tops a couple of days in winter. Frost only makes it to the ground every 10 years or so. Of course we've only had 4" of rain for the season (Nov. to present) so far with none in sight.

My Tet. is also from SVO. Maybe they made several different crosses? Or possibly had registered those already? I bought mine Nov.29, 2019.

It's really dry here, Alice. Very low humidity today, my lips and hands need moisturizer and I've got wet towels hanging around where the orchids are camping in the house to add humidity.

We do have frost/freeze warnings all the way down here to Sarasota County, but only east of I-75 so we will be fine, 40-ish. My enclosed hoop house stays above 50 so far with just frost cloth and no heat source in there except a few tubs of water that warm up in the daytime. It's on the south-facing wall of our shop building though, so that wall also collects lots of solar heat during the day. I'm sure that's what keeps it warm, plus the windbreak of the building itself. As the days go by, so comes more sun each day, thankfully.

This has been an exceptionally long, cold winter for Florida, I've got to say. These cold fronts started to make it down here in late November, and have been almost weekly since then. I'm pretty sure I'm losing weight from all the orchid shuffling I've been doing.

There has been a great deal of breeding done with kingianum, tetragonum, speciosum and others in Australia over the last few decades.
A fellow by the name of Dick Doran from Jersey grows a lot of Australian things. He grows a lot of Sarcochilus too!

I lost a Sarcochilus this year, my own fault, it needed more attention to its watering needs than I gave it. Came from EFG orchids in Deland.

38 here at around 7am, things look a bit frosty but not as much as I expected. The mist is rising off the pond giving everything a soft muted look this morning.

Had to smile at your moisturizer comment Elaine, My hands have been in terrible shape from all the washing and sanitizing required these days. My nails are peeling and for once I cannot blame it on gardening.

At 6:30 AM, the thermometer in my lanai read 30 F. There frost over the entire landscape. I am sure I'll have plenty of cold-killed tips, leaves, and plants when all this is over. Hopefully, that won't include any orchids. I couldn't (practically) protect the many hundreds of tropical outside. Time will tell what damage there is.
