Bought 2 more Red Fox & 2 Sensation Blue salvias to put alongside my fenceline. I think almost 100% of my salvias are coming back!! Even some of my zone 6 agastaches that I bought as annuals last year are coming back (grape & orange nectar).

Thought you might like to see Salvia pachyphylla in the wild in this most excellent blog.

Scroll down for many photos. When you get to the one captioned "The last Salvia pachyphylla....honest!", it's not. Smiling

I got Salvia 'San Carlos Festival' and Salvia 'Yellow Pink' from Kermit at Flowers By The Sea (among lots of other Salvias). 'San Carlos Festival' overwintered in a container and I planted 'Yellow Pink' in the same container.

Here are some pics. Click onto each one to make it larger.....

The one Salvia I'm not going to grow for the second time and/or anymore is Salvia mexicana 'Limelight'. It's still not blooming as of today and I don't even have the bloom stems yet.

I planted it this year for the first time, but not anymore! It looks gorgeous in bloom (in pics), but I'll save the money and space for a Salvia that will bloom earlier for me in zone 6a.

I keep looking at it and waiting for the buds. The flower time is:

Late summer or early fall
Fall
Late fall or early winter

Mexican Sage (Salvia mexicana 'Limelight')

I noticed Chelle had flower buds on Oct. 1 and she is in N.E. IN, zone 5b.

I hope mine blooms well before we get any frost or freeze here.

Marilyn, for a similar look, you may want to try Salvia 'Byron Flint'. Mine has been blooming for over a month now.
Salvia (Salvia mexicana 'Byron Flynt')

P.S. Love your 'San Carlos Festival' and Salvia 'Yellow Pink' photos!

Thank you for sharing the tip on this Salvia! I tip my hat to you. Thumbs up Have to get it next year at Flowers By The Sea.

Thanks about the San Carlos and Yellow Pink pics! Thumbs up

nodding

I noticed two of your pics were taken in early Winter. Blinking For someone who lives in zone 6a that would be surprising to see something in bloom at that time. Thumbs up

Do you have Hummers, Bees and/or Butterflies at that time that would enjoy the nectar? I'm all ears!

We had a milder winter last year and the 'Byron Flint' survived several brief dips below freezing with flowers intact. I was still seeing flowers until the end of January which is unusual. In the winter, I didn't notice anything feeding on the flowers, but currently the bumblebees and migrating hummingbirds are using it. It started blooming a little earlier this year than last. I got it in late summer of last year so it still had some growing to do before setting buds then. It's still a short-day/long-night blooming plant but it's early blooming for a S. mexicana and.....Oh, so pretty! I think the leaves are nice too. I got mine from FBTS and it was a nice, big plant that grew fast. This year it grew so big that I should have given it some support in my windy yard. It's currently leaning over some other plants and needs to be corralled.

oh my, that Limelight is just.. wow. Drooling Drooling Drooling wish I could find it around here.. I'd grow it as an annual & would keep it protected from early frosts / snows.
