Ok, now I guess I have to try them!! I have a couple adult plants but there's room in their pot, and seeds sound like a perfect winter challenge Hurray! Your photos are soo cute!
I tip my hat to you.

...you'll be surprised how easy they are to germinate. They do grow very slowly though! Smiling I got a mixed seed bag from ebay, hopefully they'll all be different :D x

Hi Pia, your little lithops are so cute! Thanks for posting your pic, it gives me some idea of when I can expect a bit more exciting growth from mine. I planted these between Christmas and newyear. They got a bit forgotten about in the propagator and got very leggy before I noticed, so much so I was afraid that they would snap. So I added quite a thick layer of sand to try and support them and hoped for the best. I had to transplant them yesterday because the cat knocked everything of my windowsil, it was then that I saw that they seemed to have thickened out above the sand layer and effectively the longer bit of stalk was looking more root like. I'm hoping that they will survive the latest upheaval.....Thumb of 2013-02-09/Eviesmummy/cebf2f

Welcome! Kate.
Love the photo of your baby lithop seedlings. Great save on cat mishap. Hope you will let us see how they progress in their growth.
How long did it take for your seeds to germinate?

Thanks for the welcome! I noticed the first ones popping up after 3 or 4 days. my propagator is a heated one, but of the inexpensive variety so I'm not sure how high the temperature actually gets.

Wow, that is really fast. I'm not very good at seed starting, other than the winter sow method. http://garden.org/ideas/view/valleylynn/223/Time-to-winter-s...
Not sure that would work for Lithop. I think the freezing would kill them. Looks like you definitely have the knack for seed starting.

That was an interesting read, thanks for the link. I've never tried setting any seeds off that way, but I think our climate would be too cold and wet, even in Summer for lithops to survive outside.
I think I've just been very lucky in terms of getting good seed, buying from Ebay is always a gamble! Although I've reciently discovered www.chilternseeds.co.uk and they seem to carry a bit of everything from the common to the more rare and everything I've bought from there has had good germination rates. Fingers crossed that continues because I've just sown some new cactus seeds this afternoon!

How cute the little lithops! Another thing I want to try starting from seed! And yes it would be too cold outside for them!! I tip my hat to you.
