My season has started.

Woody peony ostii has opened 8 blooms.

They were blush when they started early this morning.

Thumb of 2021-04-05/Mieko2/8d99cd

Thanks, all. Not sure about how common the edges are on the Koukamon, but since I noticed that Oscar's have them too, it may be a regular feature.

Gorgeous blooms!!! Diane..Really love that your camera catches all the details up close! Oscar here's hoping yours recover and bloom beautifully again! LG...Love those blush fade blooms!

Liz, I listen to an expert in Bonsai talk about soils needing to be specific for the climate and I realized that it is too wet here to keep a tree peony in a pot out in the open...what I remember of AL, it was pretty wet too. The grow bags do dry out, but I still lost at least 1 bush peony from the rain blowing in on it. The bonsai expert talked about how he was taught in Japan that he must use the specific Japanese mix, but he found that he had to use a totally different mix in England because the climate was so different.

ShimaNishiki only had one bud this year. It opened today, but there were no white stripes on it. Still a lovely bloom with a rose fragrance.

Beautiful, I got one last year too. I think there maybe 3 tiny buds out there, it's in full sun and that's maybe why.

Thanks all. I hope yours open and you get some blooms with stripes. Mine had bloomed before with white stripes, so I'm not worried that it isn't true to name. I just wish this bloom had them!

It's quite nice, LG. I thought white, was supposedly rather quite variable in the amount present in the blooms of 'Shima nishiki'. (Even on the same plant, on other blooms, at the same time.)
I went for a 'Taiyo', which ought to look just about like your image above, as 'Shima nisiki', is a sport from it.

I saw a peak of lavender from Lavender Hill this morning, it's going to be exciting to see my first bloom from tree peony. Any day now.

Thanks Shawn, yes it is a sport. You will be pleased to know that it is pleasantly fragrant, too.

The Princess Chiffon that I transplanted in late Winter is going to open a bloom.

Showing my ignorance here... are some of these "intersectional" peonies? I thought "tree" peonies had to mature (larger) before blooming. Only one of the 3 intersectionals I planted several years ago has started hitting its stride in terms of growth & multiple blooms... lost one and the other is kinda just hanging on. photos soon, I hope!

L.G. I'm figuring the red color may be rather quite different, between 'Taiyo', & the sport from it, you have... Because of that, it isn't quite so obviously apparent, as such.
It would be nice if the 'Shima-nishiki' in the solid red were isolated, if it hasn't been accomplished, & named already.

I'm not even sure where 'Shiunden', I bought from White Flower Farm, originally came from, as I sure don't ever recall seeing that cv. name before.

No idea, if there's any possible way, to cause a tendency towards more white streaks (Decolorized areas ?) Because, I'm
fairly certain, it's more of a genetic trait (seemingly, unstable.)
Though I really do like that solid red, of Shima-nishiki !

(I sure hope I haven't managed to confuse cv. name, as to origin of the sport, due to poor memory, & started to wonder...)
